Whats going on with this 1918P Mercury Dime.

I think struck from a Rusted Obverse Die. The Luster is still full. Please give your ideas. I have never seen this on a 18P and only have seen a Rusted Obverse Die on the 25P. Click on the pictures to blow them up.

The black is corrosion and the rest is from a worn die and possibly a little rust. One of the experts may say the die was not hardened properly.
Yup looks like a rusty die,
Hoard the keys.
I think there is more than one thing going on there.
One of which is environmental damage from improper storage.
The other one or two involves the dies.
I'm with Pat on this.
Looks like die pitting.
Die pitting and erosion.... that second picture does not even look like the same dime... the face detail is so faded..... must be the angle... Cheers, RickO
I would describe the die as "rode hard, put away wet."
