Old coinage still can be found in change.

Amazingly I found this nickel in my wife's change lying on the counter. I noticed it just had that look of age and color to it that caught my eye. If not, I would have never found it as I no longer(for many years) go through change.

One of the advantages to our circulating coinage have relatively the same designs over the last 50-100 years.
You can still find some oldies, but goodies!

Even in the early 1970s, 1942 nickels were harder to find than their relatively high mintage (49 million) would indicate.
I would find multiple examples of 1939, 40, 41 for every 1942 that I would find.

I have found by accident over the years quite a few 39's and one or two 41's. No silver nickels, but in the late 80's I had a mom and pop's store, groceries, beer, gas, hardware and such and got many rolls of silver quarters and dimes. I also got many rolls of 40% Kennedy's. Very exciting time. Mines laid off and people dug for anything to give to the banks for cash.

A couple of weeks back myself and another forumite each found 1938's within a couple of days of each other.

I remember commenting that if two of us on this forum found them within a couple of days imagine how many must still be out there at any given moment.

One of the young numismatists in the Rochester Numismatic Association junior club is a roll searcher. He's done pretty much all denominations but dollars at this point. He's found more than an entire roll of silver nickels in his searches. The occasional Buffalo nickel also turns up. He's also, of course, found numerous wheaties and the occasional silver dime, quarter or half (40%).

All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.

when I saw the thread I immediately assumed it was a Nickel.

the reasoning is quite simple --- of all our circulating coinage, except for some very minor or very brief nuances, the Nickel has remained unchanged for almost 80 years, a 1938 is identical to a 1988 so no one notices.

with a Cent, the entire reverse is different, even an average citizen hears the "ring" of a silver dime or quarter and the half-dollar has been absent for decades, same for the Ike Dollar. when something out of the ordinary shows up most people notice........................unless it's a Nickel.

My mom just recently got one of those charity solicitations with a couple of nickels in it and one was a decent 47-S!
