Baltimore Show Report

On the plane coming back from the coin show in Baltimore. This is my third Baltimore show and I have to say it is a really good coin show. Good size, lots of dealers and a noticeable amount of the public attending.
I really only go to this show all the way from San Francisco because my first mentor, Emory Robinson, sets up there. I worked in his coin store as a kid for five years in my hometown, Jacksonville, FL. He is 82 now, so I try to spend as much time with him as possible. He doesn't fly, only drives, so I need to go to the east coast to see him.
Now that I have been a few times, I am really impressed. I haven't been to Long Beach in over a year, but the Baltimore show seems larger. I actually extended my stay through Saturday...it was really nice to see so many members of the public there....great to see Parents and their children. Usually I leave a show by Friday - so you never see the young numismatists. Every kid that walked by, I made an effort to show them a really rare coin and explain it to them. Its nice to see their faces light up. When I was a kid, my Father took me to shows. Every now and then, not very often, a dealer would hand me some incredible coin and tell me about it. It really made an impression on me at that young age. I remember most. In fact, I remind dealers today how kind they were to me as a child - 30 years ago, I usually tell them about the coin they showed me, believe it or not nearly all will reminder the coin!
There were several rare coins in the auction. I loved the 1792 Silver Center Cent. Some of the Proof Gold was amazing. The 1794 Half AU58+ was way up there. The coin that I really wanted was the Assay Twenty PCGS MS63 CAC. Lovely coin. I just had to have it. I placed a bid that was 20% above comps, then decided to add another 20% of that to get the coin. You would think that would have been enough? Wrong. I lost it, and was down about it. I bought a lot of cool coins at the sale, but that was the one i wanted. Congrats to the new owner....that is a heck of a coin.
Also, I had Todd image about 50 coins for my website, I wasn't aware of this, but he has a crazy quick turnaround, it felt like he had the coins for 1 hour. Cant wait to get the images....we all know how great they will be. Use his services!
Other random coins I saw...1896 Twenty PR66DCAM CAC, David at Kagins, has an unreal Wass Molitor $50 Gold that is the best.....David always has great coins. One case had about a half dozen slugs in AU. I saw a few nice a few nice PR68 Morgans. Bill Shamhart always has great proof type. Legend - first class coin all the way. Chris N. has off the charts type and is one of the nicest guys around.
Great show, I really had a good time. I'm tired now. I hope you got a little insight into the show.

Nice write up - thanks for sharing!
Great show report. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like you had a great time. I agree with most of your dealer recommendations - Dave at Kagin's always has some killer coins!
Thanks for the write up!
Very informative and interesting
@SethChandler.... Great report and good stories about your show experiences as a kid...lasting memories. Thanks for taking the time to tell us about it.... Cheers, RickO
I've been to Baltimore once, but never to a coin show. Where did they hold the show? Somewhere along the harbor? What a great location that is~
Suberb write up as always

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
And thanks for putting into those kids; what goes around, comes around!
Well, just Love coins, period.
What I mostly took away from this report was your showing respect to your mentor by flying across country, to see him/show respect to him in that manner. Kudos to you. Many people forget where they came from and who helped them get there.

Thanks for the report! Went back and looked at the archive for the assay $20. Sweet coin.
Attending FUN?

That is such a pretty assay piece - I can see it going for a real premium. Doesn't have the dipped out look like so many pieces.
Nice report Seth. I really liked the Assay twenty and bid on it several times (just not quite enough) during the auction. There is some nice upside if the coin upgrades to 64 which I suppose is possible? It has great eye appeal and I am sure the new owner is very happy to win it.
Very nice report. I also enjoyed Baltimore when I went. Will try to get there again next year.
Good report, and Baltimore is always a good show--best shows besides the summer ANA or winter FUN.
Great show report, but I have to say that you've been stocking material that's on par with a lot of the people that you've complimented here. No foolin.
What is now proved was once only imagined. - William Blake
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
Boiler78, Yes, I do believe the Assay $20 was a shot 64, I should have factored that in a lot more. Dumb. It really was a great coin.
Nic, yep, I will be at FUN, see you there.
Seth, you have some great coins!! I thought the Assay $20 was a beautiful 63 coin, but did not grade it 64. I'm sure Colonel Jessup has several gems squirreled away that he got at time of issue...
Seth,
I recall those early days well at Emory's shop. You had a great eye back then, and still do!!!
You also have some awesome coins. They were the coins we talked about as kids, and now you own them.
I jsut want to see that set of Proof Double Eagles you always talked about
