Finally got all the major "3's"!!!

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,901 ✭✭✭✭✭

For the 1823 Capped Bust half varieties that is! Those Broken, Patched and Ugly 3's are not the easiest to come by. While mine are not high grade, they do appear to be unmolested. The Broken 3 grades a 40, the others are 45's. The first one is a 'normal' 1823, graded AU-53.

very cool, really ugly and wonderful . Between this set and GoBust's 1836-39 set posted yesterday, I am getting very interested in these.

Very cool. Love those varieties. Not easy to find original and eye appealing.

That's a really neat little group you have there. I am really partial to the design of the "2" in these early CBH's.

Congrats on getting all three different "3's" for 1823.

I'm still missing the Patched 3 myself. I really like the look of all of them, especially the first 1823. Looks to be a O-104 by the obverse die characteristics, and more like a 55 (at least from the obverse). Also, very cool double profile on that first 1823...not uncommon for this date.

Looking at your Broken 3 a little more, it actually looks (at least from the obv wear) to be more of a VF35 than a 40. Compare your Broken 3 to both your Patched and Ugly 3's.

    Do you agree ElmerFusterPuck?

Sort of inclined, but I was thinking more blunt strike. It does have luster around the edges which is not too evident in the photo. I did come across other Broken 3's in my search, a couple I just missed out on and the others were just too blast white for XF pieces.

Although it may have more luster, the wear pattern in the pic is more typical of a VF35 in my opinion.

I prefer the earlier years but 1823 is special.

Very sweet broken, patched and ugly 3's, Erik. There's also the "tampered-with 3" and "tall 3" (not Redbook varieties but still really fun ones). Here are examples.
