The Doily market is alive and well!

On GC tonight a 1861 3c PCGS MS64 CAC went for $1040!

PCGS retail $625.

I was tempted for my PCGS Collectible Holder type set but just couldn't pull the trigger at that level.

Unique for large star 2 line 3c type (Type 3).

(Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

The $2.5's sold for a smaller premium over retail - roughly $100 - looks like there are some serious collectible holder type collectors still out there.

I was watching that one as well to see where it would end. I wonder if the selling price is due to the fact that many PL and DMPL coins in older holders can't get that designation today. How well do doily's hold up for those designations?

Is this a market that is going to have legs 10 years in the future? I don't know but would not be willing to bet on it.

I believe that MS 66 Morgan sold sometime last year on eBay for around the same price. The consensus was that it wasn’t strong enough for PL. So relative to a normal 66, the premium was over 2x guide.

I am busy enough with collecting coins... the slab generation would only complicate things... :D;) Cheers, RickO
