Grading is nothing but an opinion of whoever was grading on the day it was graded.
I've NEVER received a gift like that first coin.

While it doesn't look like a 66+ from the pictures, the images are very grainy, blurry, and shot through scratched plastic. So at least for me I wouldn't be able to definitely draw any conclusions.
Comparing different coins in relation to their grades isn't effective because coins aren't graded in comparison to one another.

I could take the comparison away and still be hard pressed to find someone to say that coin is a 66+RD.

Can we see both coins using the same photography technique? The 65 is nice, but the 66+ is possibly being shown to its worst advantage.
Your assessment might be 100% correct, but without being able to compare apples to apples, it’s impossible to draw conclusions.
While I find most grading to be fairly consistent, occasionally we do see coins that cause us to take exception. This could be one, however, as noted above, some better pictures would help (listen to me, I, who could not take a good picture to win the lotto). That being said, it would not be the first coin that has been shown to be 'generously graded'....

I agree with the comments here about grading from images. The 66 - those are lousy images - typical of the dreck images I see on ebay, and that puts this cent in a bad light (literally.......). So no chance in drawing a conclusion without seeing in hand and/or seeing images that one knows for sure are showing the coin realistically.

The images are good enough to pick out the multiple hits on Lincolns forehead and cheek. The reverse strike is among the worst I have seen for this date, not to mention the multiple hits on ONE CENT. Don't need better pics to see this coin is over graded by 2 or 3 grades.
Not true. Those hits on the forehead and cheek may not be there at all. Look at the other photos from the same listing. Now you see them, now you don't.
Same with the reverse strike, it looks like a completely different coin in the other images.

Some day, you folks are going to learn to stop grading coins based on photos which may not be that good.

I'll say it. It's a 66 Red. The photos are bad. If it weren't $600, I'd buy it just to prove the point.

Perhaps they liked the uncommon color on the first one and did not like the "roll rub" all over Lincoln's face in the second. Coins such as this may tend to flip-flop each time they are sent in. After all, I've heard that any coin worth grading is worth sending in several times.
So what are you saying? Some photos hide the marks and some do not? I'm viewing on an I-pad and can enlarge even the slabbed photos to 3 inches in diameter. News flash........ the hits are still there. The OP has one of top registry Lincoln sets. He knows what the typical grading standards are for the series.

Yeah, the photos suck. But I agree with OP. That coin doesn't deserve 66+.

Look closer, its a 66+(plus)RD, and I triple dog dare you to buy this coin and keep it just to prove a point.

Even in my limited experience it’s horribly over graded. No trick of lighting can make those nicks on the reverse go away.
Just look at the chunk taken out of the "O" on the reverse.
