I always thought encased coins were cool, but never really messed with them. Most appear to be common dates and a recent trip to a Pennsylvania antique store appeared to be no different, until I made a second pass around a case. This encased, well-struck 1922-D cent advertising a long-defunct bank was too cool to pass up on. The cent appears to be in XF-AU, which is also a plus.
Anyone else chase these kinds of collectibles?

I don't actively collect encased coins but have some. Some of the expos have very creatively done encased coins.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I collect encased coins, mostly the "neutron irradiated" (atomic) dimes and encased silver dollars and other silver coins.
Encased cents are a lot more plentiful, but not the scarcer-date coins. Here is mine:

I had several encased cents when I was a kid.... no idea what happened to them...Banks should start doing that again... though with zincolns, they won't last as long.... maybe use nickels....I will mention that next time I am at the bank. Maybe start a trend...

His is an extreme example, but some impact to the cent is common, if the hole in the die is smaller than the diameter of the cent (or off center).

The encasements are generally struck while the cent is positioned in the center. The striking causes the metal to move and fills the gap between the encasement and the coin, locking them together. The encasement "donut" die can often flatten parts of the coin's rim. This is one way to determine if the coin is original to the encasement.
