My tired old work horse .....any chance she can recover?
My decades old ANCO 16x loupe is toast. Just so old and worn that the optics need polishing as the scratches
are just too many. Can she be helped or should she just cross rainbow bridge and wait for me to arrive?

I had a triplet loupe for over 20 years that I used almost every day. When it finally came time to retire it I “buried” it in my sock drawer. Still take it out every now and then for old times sake.

Holy cow, I have the first magnifying glass I bought about 48 or 49 years ago. I don't even remember what the brand name is, I'll have to pull it out and see.
It's a dual lens in a brown plastic folding cover. Still works like a champ, better than my own eyes anyway. I don't use it often but when I do pull it out, it's in good shape.

I use the same loupe. Mine is about 25 years old. Great optics. They were made to last.

Ditch it. Unless you are looking for micro DD or varieties, 16X is too powerful to be of any practical use. I'll bet you cannot see 1/5 of a Morgan dollar at a time using that thing. At my age, by the time I look at both sides of the entire coin a small piece at a time, I forgot what I saw from the beginning! :'(

WOW! 16X nothing can get by you with that magnification! I have a 10X loupe by Bausch & Loom, a fold out that has served me well for over 30 years.

You could buy yourself a new one for less than 15 bucks - swap the new glass into your old frame.

Not something you can use to grade with but a great tool for varieties.

I've had my 2 trusty "Selsi Doublet" 17x for 47 years now. They've traveled quite extensively through the years and have served me well in my error coin hunts.

I have never been able to keep 1 in tact that long! The lenses always unscrew out of the housing easier and easier until finally it barfs the lenses into a place where I can't find them!

Out of curiosity, I have a similar one, which was gifted to me by a fellow Forum member many years ago. But it has Phillips screw-heads (which are constantly working their way loose) on both sides of each post, and nothing engraved on the metallic case. Comes in a black, rectangular plastic case with a red paper/plastic insert & clear plastic cover. Etched into the cover are the letters "SF" in a circle - - kinda like the 49ers' logo) and some worn-off lettering that appears to be "?JF W???????OUPE". May have had some paperwork inside at one point, but not now. Any way to figure out from these scant clues what the magnification is on this one?

Yep...bury that one for some future archaeologist to discover....
.... Come to think of it, I have not seen my Zeiss in a while.... not having any shows to go to, I seem to have misplaced it.... Oh well...today's mission... should I decide to accept it.... will be to find my loupe....

I suspect I have put that loupe to more than 1,000 CC dollars. It also helped determine that my Presentation 1870cc dollar was from the first die pairing which adds to the provenance. It's viewed more errors than I can count. I did so love that glass.
