From Davy Jones' locker--Shipwreck effect coins

I have been mystified at the high prices garnered by some of the "ship wreck effect" coins like this one with a display that went for well over $600 with the display case: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1861-O-SS-Republic-Seated-Half-Confederate-Coin-W-14-NGC-BOX-COA-1009-/152732207994?hash=item238f8c8b7a:g:sM8AAOSwwVpZ158d&nma=true&si=5hCKUz00MD%2BF%2Fze5Zjooi%2BXtHso%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Many of the gold coins survived the sea water and related effects; the silver coins were marketed like this as having the "effect". Has the marketing of these coins held their value?

They are cross collectable and non-coin collectors can pay stupid money similar to the "grandma" premium.
I do not buy these coins but there is an innate interest in the history of them.
I hate to reveal my great dealer but here he is.

Really cool story!
@1630Boston What is the name of the white-haired coin dealer in the movie please.
@logger7 The 1861-O was struck by the CSA, that + shipwreck/story brings the value.

That's Caldwell with Northeast numismatics.
Coins with stories = high premiums. Many people like these coins.... the only coins with stories that I like, are the one's I find....Now those are 'special'....

I'd really love to have an S.S. Central America Half Dime. I saw a few on the previously posted inventory of the finds, but never saw any for sale after that. I probably missed them if they were auctioned off. Always a day late and a half dime short.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Shall I tell you how to make one at home?
Only one shipwreck coin interests me - the single gold coin found in the Hunley.
Lt. George Dixon's Coin
Gold has a world price entirely unaffected by accounting games between the Treasury and the Fed. - Jim Rickards
The Hunley Museum sells replicas of Dixon's coin. I have one somewhere.
I've seen it and it's an amazing piece of history. When I saw it there was a North Carolina Trooper standing guard next to it.
