J&M Coins offers $100,000 reward for recovery of stolen coins and banknotes

A long time dealer in Vancouver, B.C. is offering a reward of $100,000 for the return of at least 75 per cent of the following items, a partial list of items stolen from Mississauga, Ont., on Sept. 26, 2017, at approximately 1p.m. local time.

Vancouver dealer (Joe) in town (Toronto) for a large coin show on Friday to Saturday, Sept. 29-30.
Kind of strange having all those coins (and that's only a partial list) stolen at 1pm, but I'm sure more details will be forthcoming.

The only detail I added was the dealer's first name and the upcoming coin show in Toronto.
Two facts that I would assume 99% of all Canadian collectors would already know so I didn't think it would matter.

Or..........the coins are not quality or rare items?

Wow... would really like to know the details.... (That is the security professional part of me - often can learn something)....Very sorry to hear this, it is a major theft and seriously damaging to the dealer. I sincerely hope the material is recovered. Unlikely it will get to this area, but I will keep an eye on the antique shops... Cheers, RickO
Jo is a great dealer and everyone knows him as a "good" guy.
I am really sorry that this happened to him.
So here are the key questions I have:
who knew where he was at that time? (most likely only someone who knows him well and had contact with him while in Mississauga / Toronto area)
where would one now, after the public knows, flip the rare notes? (light your smokes with them for fun?) nobody will buy them.
And, where would one sell the coins? IF they are to be sold?
perhaps it was an "order" from a unknown collector who will hide the coins for years, eventually break them out and has them re-graded. Unless Jo has micro images of each coin it will be nearly impossible to identify once outside the flip / slab.
One of my key questions is this:
why would a well known dealer have all the super items with him and basically unprotected?
many thoughts can go through ones mind looking for answers.
I hope they find the thief(s) and as part of their sentence, make them look for varieties at the Mint in 5 million of old returned pennies and all the while only getting water and bread to eat and drink. For every mistake they make another 100,000 pennies will be added to be checked.
Seems like a good new way for the mint to make a buck: selling old varieties and dates.
Many of the goods are from their catalogues. Some pretty rare stuff that will be very difficult to sell anywhere. Some of that stuff is so rare that it'll be next to impossible to dispose of for any real gain. The real money to be made is in reward. I hope they can get their stuff back because its great inventory that was available on the market.

One can't really know what happened without details of the heist. Either way, unless there was some mastermind behind it i don't think the mystery will remain unsolved for too long. The paper money is worthless as stolen property and like i said, some of those coins are too rare to sell without raising attention

J&M doubles reward for stolen coins and paper money.
A reward for the recovery of more than $1 million dollars worth of high-end Canadian coins and banknotes, stolen while a Canadian coin dealer was checking into a Toronto-area hotel, has doubled to $200,000.
“I just want my inventory back and I am willing to pay a good reward for its return,” said Joseph Iorio, owner of J&M Coin and Jewellery Ltd.
The theft occurred on Sept. 26, after the Vancouver-based coin dealer arrived at Pearson International Airport to participate in a Toronto coin show later that week.
At about 1 p.m. on Sept. 26, Iorio checked into the Monte Carlo Inn Airport Suites at 7035 Edwards Blvd. in Mississauga.

Hope that the merchandise is recovered. Amazing how frequently these thefts occur.
As stated before I hope he recovers his items. I can't help but wondering after reading the article if he was followed to the hotel or was it a criime of opportunity.

That sucks... I hope the items get recovered and the perpetrator(s) enjoys a slow death. An agonizing , miserable , excruciatingly lonely one. I'd rather they just come clean and return the items. Fat chance, eh ?
Police release suspect description, video in J&M theft
Peel police said the suspect is described as male with an olive complexion, heavy build, an age of 35 to 45 years and a balding hairline.
Joe Iorio, owner of J&M, flew into Toronto from Vancouver on Sept. 26 to attend a coin show later that week in downtown Toronto. After leaving Pearson International Airport, Iorio told Canadian Coin News he went to the Monte Carlo Inn Airport Suites at 7035 Edwards Blvd., near Derry Road, in Mississauga. He parked near the hotel lobby area to check-in.
In a press release, Peel police said Iorio parked his motor vehicle in the hotel parking lot. “At approximately 1 p.m., the suspect gained entry into the motor vehicle and stole two bags containing a quantity of collectible coins and bank notes from within it. The total value of items stolen is estimated at $1.3 million.”

I would not leave 1.3 million dollars in my car while I checked in. How did the dude know what car to go after and what to grab? He had just landed and drove straight to a hotel. The coin show was later in the week and downtown, not anywhere near this hotel. (Looks 20 miles away)
That is one lucky crook if this is all by chance.

If he just kept some sharp, high tech and energetic private eyes on the case like bloodhounds, his chances will be good. The authorities just don't have the incentives, they get paid whether or not they do their jobs.

Seems to me coin dealers never learn. There is long history of dealers being complacent and being hit this way. If I was carrying even $100,000.00 I would never leave my coins in the car. A few weeks ago a friend of mine left her purse in the car at a busy 7-11 and poof! Gone when she came out.
For a few hundred dollars you can ship Brinks or hire a guard to transport. You have nothing to work with if you have no coins. Protect them!
