Easy, you keep your eyes open, monitor mintages and the prices and buy what you like if you like its price. If I had a "mint," I should make some very limited products for myself and put them on the market as a free for all and let my appreciative public fight over them. It's called "Capitalism." The U.S. Mint knows how it works. Let's make a few "mules"... LOL.

I remember the 1st time I saw them for sale on Ebay I got the two confused.

The OP has the two mixed up, he is stating its a 1964 Peace that is listed, when it is actually a 1964 Morgan.

The matte 1964 Peace is IMO one of his best products, second only to Oregon Trail and Confederate 20 Dollar in gold.

As said in other posts to this thread, "I'm confused!" Is there a link to an Ebay auction?

The matte is very nice. Wish I was around when they were first produced so I could have grabbed one of each like the 64d Morgan. As is, I only have a bulk handled die pair 5 and this die pair 6 that I was able to pick up at the Denver ANA which I wouldn't trade for 2 mattes! Fresh back from ANACS...

I've never been quite sure why these were legal. I mean, I imagine you can skirt the counterfeiting laws by arguing that they are a "fantasy" as the coin was never issued. BUT,

    1. Doesn't the Mint or the original designer own the trademark on the design?
    2. It has the denomination "dollar" and I thought it was illegal to use a U.S. government denomination in such a fashion.

    Lawyers? Anyone?

This has all been discussed at length, over many years, with many experts, and many lawyers. All is well.

Dan outlined what he did to it, experimenting I assume, in the "Dan Carr's latest" thread. Probably around 10 pages or so back.. around mid September.

I believe that I saw a 1964-D Peace Dollar Token in a flip in one of Daniel Carr's case at the ANA this past August which appeared to be heavily worn down.. I wanted to talk to him about its "availability", but he was tied up with some other folks...for quite a long time.

There was, the OP deleted it when I pointed out his confusion. He thought the auction was for a 1964 Peace but it was actually for the 1964 Morgan.

No one has ever stated they are illegal and the secret service has yet to confiscate them. So for now they seem legal.

All I ever see is Dan Carr's statements on the subject. That's hardly an objective legal opinion.

I just bought and sold a 65 peace dollar. Might have sold it too low, who knows. Why are those not as hot as the 1964?

I would assume its because the mint never made and destroyed a 1965.
