Most letters were dictated to a clerk who took the message in shorthand, then transcribed it into manuscript or typed format. As those who collect historical documents know, there is a large value difference between a letter with Lincoln's signature (not an autopen) and one written and signed in his own handwriting.
Longacre is dead? I didn't even know that he was sick!!!!!!

There is dedication for you - he waited until his shift was though. He passed at 5:00 P.M. on a Friday.
What is notable is that he seems to have died on New Year's Day. Mortally ill people have this thing about hanging on until just after holidays and other small milestones in the calendar.
He was gravely ill and on Jan 1, William Barber was designated as Acting Engraver.
She didn't even know how to spell the first month. What is Jany???
Clerks at the time were always male. "Jan'y" was a common abbreviation. Many similar abbreviations were in common use.
