1990's Proof California Gold, any info?

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,975 ✭✭✭✭✭

I normally see the bears when you see California gold from the 1980's and 1990's and I know some of the issues are insanely rare, but does anyone have any info on these? These came across the imaging table today and it is hard to find any info, I see a couple random sales but really not much.

Just curious.....

The "CC" mark is a reference to Continental Coin and Jewelry Company.
They are still in business in Van Nuys.
They have also produced numerous silver bars over the years, some marketed as being sourced from the US "strategic stockpile".

Most of the items have traits that seem to match other products from the Silvertowne Mint.

Interesting I saw some things that said it was done by the rarities mint.

The California Government Code specified the location of the "mint mark" on the "medallion", it did not specify mintage.

They were created to be sales tax exempt. The gold was mined in CA.
If a product is not only made in CA but also sourced in CA then it is considered a completely internal item and was not taxable on sale.

When I lived there over 25 years ago I would buy those. I believe I still have a few of them. They were a neat item. Similarly at the time the State of Texas was involved in something along those lines and I bought a few of the silver rounds.

Here's a statue of the animal which inspired these coins:

Nice looking gold tokens.... I have gone to many, many coin shows out west and I have never seen those sets.
