Just because a person is a welcomed customer that helps guarantee the lights stay on at the TPGS due to $$$,$$$ of business does not necessarily make them a top grader. I think the guy who sells him the coins raw (with no overhead from grading fees) just may have a clue too.

in a way I am glad this thread got derailed. private collector was not fully correct in the premise he was trying to have his way on. yet, he refuses to acknowledge his 1808 $2.5 was a 64 then upgraded.

Upon reflection, too many half-truths I would not co-sign. There is value in what's said, but I'm seeing a lack of perspective about many areas of the market.

That is utter nonsense. It might be true if the TPGs were now grading more consistently and to a new, significantly lower standard. But that is not the case.

While the premise is stated as an absolute, or at least a sloppy generalization,, it has some market validity. Morgans are getting crushed lately, but "superb for the grade" usually works the 2nd or 3rd time. Just sayin'

Ok, let's get this over with. Don't know who that poster was. I have some hunches. Here is the thing, none of this "stuff" impresses me. Some want us to be impressed. I couldn't care less who the best in the business is. Who only wholesales and auctions coins.
Me thinks some get impressed easily. I am just a low-life collector. Besides, there are top graders that still own b&m shops and don't need to puff their chests on an online forum.
I guess some feel a need to talk stuff about themselves all the time. Making their bones, chops etc. that's funny to me. You'd think they were in. Old style New York in the 20's in the mafia. When That would be impressive. Taking the dog for walk now. Heh

I've never seen this coin: "As for the Chain 1c in question, I have never liked that one, nor the Eliasberg MS65 with a clip and scratched corrosion on the reverse. Neither coin fits what I see as "Gem", and neither is what I consider to be a million dollar Chain 1c."
The dirty little secret we all know is that problems - not the clip, the spot removal (?) tend to be ignored on "special" coins from "special" collections. For example, there is a very heavily damaged and carved up "special" $10 gold that was straight graded when the collection was graded before auction. Have no idea where it is now.
