I know its currency, however, I just had to share.
I don't know anything about the book it was in, she was taking our Grandkids home, handed it to me and said, "Look what I just found in an old book." (will update that later)
Not my pic, representative of the condition, probably worth $40.00 or so.
Much more as a keepsake!
Ooops, It's an 1899, named the 'The Porthole Note' as it appears as though G.W. is looking out an porthole.

    Great! That's how I got started. Found a Capped Bust dime in one of Grandpa's old books. I was 6-7 years old. That dime really got my attention. I was...HOOKED!

    Great find! Its condition serves as a reminder that there was a time when US paper money was allowed to remain in circulation for considerably longer than is the case today.

    It's probably worth about the same amount of money today as the two silver dollars for which it could have been redeemed, unless, of course, they were BU CCs.

    Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.

    As stated in my first post, image was from a web page, pics coming soon.
    The book was printed in 1907.
    She purchased the book at a thrift store, 30 some years ago.

    I think I shall claim 'eminent domain' and forbid its sale! (wish me luck, told her its not very $$)
    I really think, as per my first post, the note, and the book in which it was found should remain in the family and passed down.

    Really got her attention when I'd informed that it would be close to $3K had it been Perfect!
    I want her to save the book and note for our Grand Daughter she is six, carefully handles the coins I give her, saves them in very nice cigar boxes, YN I hope!

    I was at an estate auction years ago. There were several hundred books. Folks were finding old notes in the books. Never saw books sell for so much.

    I have two notes like this that I have framed and hanging on the wall. They were given to me by my grandparents in the 1970s and they were found inside a book in the belongings of my great-grandmother. Neither has much monetary value, but I attempt to educate my daughters about history and family with the notes.

    That's really cool. As somebody who buys and works in estate sales I have always found "book Finds" to be most satisfying.
    Seldom Items of big value but neat history to maybe ponder on.

    Likely used as a page marker. A book someone started to read but didn't finish. A book no-one else read since because someone somewhere always had it packed away.

    The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

    Very nice.

    Years ago I bought an old 'Blue Book' by Yeoman.
    When I got it home I found a Canadian fractional note and a US fractional note.
    Each worth more than the $1 that I paid for the book.
    I always look in old book, just for fun

    Wow... Great find... that would make my day, week and month.... Now I will go to estate sales and check all the books.... ;) When I lived in Seattle, my neighbor bought some old books at a yard sale...His wife opened one and found $5... they started checking and ended up with $57....No old notes though....Cheers, RickO

    I had an uncirculated 1890's US dollar note that had been stored in a book.

    The note was so brittle that it crumpled when I tried to scan it on a computer scanner.

    I believe that the old book's acidic paper damaged the note.

    Great find. But, actually, the 1923 $5 Silver Certificate is known as the "Porthole Note".
