No coin show nearby? Why not have your own !

A member recently lamented, "I hate not being any where near a coin show."

OK, so there isn't a large, coin show convenient to you every weekend. Do you yearn for the challenge of the hunt and the thrill of discovery?

Well, why not pull out those boxes and cases of stuff from the back of the bank box or closet and have your very own, personal coin show - just for you! It's amazing what we forget. Nearly every collector, of every means, probably has several unusual coins, medals or tokens sitting, awaiting discovery. Does that roll of VF-EF Buffalo hide a 1916/16 or 1918/17. How many doubled dies lurk in that bag of Mercury dimes you've been meaning to search for the past 10 years?

If there's no coin show in town this weekend, then hold your own and be amazed at what you'll find!

(PS: If you really want to capture the atmosphere, grill some short-date hot dogs, put 'em on stale buns, and squirt mustard on your shirt.)

:)

I think the Battlefield Coin Shows did a good job starting their own.

As for my own collection, I like looking at a few pieces at a time.

Good point. Many nice coins are not appreciated often enough.

This is true. Many of us view our coin pictures more than our coins

I believe RogerB is referring to me. :pensive:

Alas, I've never owned a roll of Buffalo nickels, a bag of Mercury dimes, or even unusual coins. I'm VERY specific and disciplined in building my collection. In fact, I've only purchased FIVE coins during the past FOUR years. When I shared this fact with a friend recently, he said he'd lose interest in collecting if he could only buy five coins in just one year. I guess I'm not like most collectors

But I still like your post Roger.

I love viewing coins in hand because that is when they come alive. It's great to feel the heft and watch the light bounce off a coin. That being said, pictures are more convenient, especially for sharing online here.

I'd host my own coin show for my personal enjoyment, only to find there wasn't anything I could afford! ;)

I usually keep a short stack of Morgan Dollars on the desk. Unencumbered by plastic or stickers, they get to be real coins.

This sounds like fun. What better dealer to cherrypick than yourself!

When I hold my personal coin show now and then, memories of previous shows come back from when/where/who notes.

RE: "I believe RogerB is referring to me."

Shamika - yes, but certainly only in a positive sense of presenting the core of a good idea. Shows are one of the little pleasures of coin collecting - or most other hobbies.

Thus my disappointment that I don't live near Long Beach, Chicago, or Orlando. :disappointed:

@Shamika.... I totally relate... both the scarcity of shows and the frequency of adding to my collection....it has to be special to capture my interest....As far as starting a coin show... Great idea, however, I would not know where to begin and how to get the word out.... Fun concept though...now, if I only knew other collectors around here (other than a nephew YN who has now discovered girls).....Cheers, RickO
