pcgs coin supposedly lost in the mail (ebay transaction). What to do?

This was a coin I sold for about $500. The tracking number says it was delivered. The buyer opened a case with ebay (and the post office) saying that it was never delivered. I'm not sure what ebay will decide or if it's just right for me to partially refund the buyer or offer a replacement coin (not same date/mm as I don't have another duplicate. I am a collector selling a duplicate, not a dealer).

Is there a lost/stolen coin registry? Should I immediately register the lost coin under my account?

If it was eligible for seller protection and the tracking shows delivered you should be covered by ebay. If insured you should make a claim with the USPS and that will put the heat on the buyer if he did indeed receive it!

Paypal will cover you if you followed their guidelines.

    PayPal always covers me.

  • if your tracking number shows delivered to the address on file with ebay then you will not have to reimburse them. someone in their family may have picked the item up from the mail ect. you will win no matter what as long as your tracking # shows delivered and that is the reason they opened a case.

I would apologize to the customer, then explain you cannot give a refund because it shows as delivered. Then let ebay/paypal know that it shows as delivered, and you will hopefully be protected.

Call PayPal customer service as they are the best.

DO NOT call ebay customer service as they are the worst and can delay your coverage.

Politely ask them to check with family and neighbors and mailman as it's always a hassle to open a Postal investigation on stolen merchandise. This usually gets a positive response.

Oh and if you have not already googled the buyers address, do so. I like to see where it's going and what is around the delivery address......clues.

Contact the post office as they can run a GPS tracking on the package that will show time and address site where the package was scanned. The postal carriers are to scan the package at the delivery point. The GPS can be off one or two houses. If the GPS shows the package delivered at buyers address, it will help your case with eBay.

I went through this about two months ago. The package was delivered/tracked to a house one street over and was recovered.

I recently had a package showing delivery to my house and never received it, because the mailman delivered it to the same house (House #) 1 street over by mistake. I went to the P.O. and let them know. They checked the GPS on their handheld device and told me what happened. They went over and obtained the package and delivered it. All n all it took 2 full days.

    Good luck Jaime.

    Later, Paul.

Pretty good advice here. The part that is concerning is what is the outcome for the buyer if

    A. The carrier made an error and marked it delivered when it was not or...

    B. His unsecured mailbox was compromised.

I would suspect that his CC through Paypal would cover his side as well as the protection offered to the seller.

Yes and payapl will eat it. I have no problem paying PayPal fees because of their awesome protection plus excellent service.

I've had it happen before, customer had me ship a package to his doorstep in the middle of NYC and then complained when I didn't cough up an extra $3 for signature confirmation on a $60 item when it wasn't anywhere to be found. Like everyone else says, as long as its delivered the blame can't fall on you!

Looks like good advice given up to here do not refund as it's in others hands not yours.

Let PCGS know the certificate number of the lost coin so we can deactivate it. AllCoinsRule, please PM me.

You might want to hold off on this a while. I wouldn't be surprised if the coin turned up. There's time down the road to deactivate it, if need be.

A lot of good advice here; time is usually of the essence when usps worker(s) still remember the parcel and delivery. Most numismatic coins mean little except to other hobbyists. I hope it is just human confusion and shows up.

With any item over $250.00 with out signature confirmation you are going to lose! You will need to make a refund even if they received the coin. If the package was not signed for by someone who lives at that address you have no recourse.

I believe it was upped to $750 for signature confirmation being necessary. Paypal has put a hold on the funds though so I am not fully confident I'll get them back.

the funds will go on hold whether they have a real claim or not. I once had ~200 on hold because someone put a claim on the wrong transaction and forgot to hit 'resolved'. Don't worry, I'm confident you'll be fine with what you've said

This happened to me today I received an email today from ebay that my package (coin bought on ebay) was delivered @11:30 am, My USPS mail goes at 4pm usually. Thought what the heck would go look and there was no package checked the usps tracking and said it delivered. The issue is i also mailed a package out today and tracking says it was picked up at 3:50pm. So apparently the carrier was not paying attention and delivered it to the wrong address this is not the first time.

If that shows delivered, eBay washes their hands of it and you are off the hook. They will probably open a CC dispute though.

What does this mean? Does it show up as stolen when checking the cert number?

CC company then communicates with to PP for details. PP will fight on your behalf and say "tracking shows delivered." But, ultimate decision rest with CC company.

I too thought eBay required signature confirmation for items over $250.

Never had it happen but I believe eBay / PayPal will cover you if u sent it signature confirmation with tracking.

Material can be misdelivered or stolen especially if mail box not a locked one. I would pursue through USPS insurance claim if not taken care of by pp.

Yes PayPal will "hold" your money.

Every time this has happened to me, I called paypal and they released the funds back to me based on my long record with PayPal.

@AllCoinsRule ... glad to see it is closed and you received the funds. Cheers, RickO
