Friend asked me to buy the 90 percent he collected in the 1960s

Didnt mention until I got there how much there was. Heres what I brought home 3k fv. Have about 8 more similar trips to his house to buy it all. He picked it up in 1966 , wish we were closer when silver was $45 an ounce. He is on his way out doesnt need the money and doesnt want his wife to have the burden. All stored in pant cans. 2 cans equal 1000fv. Cool find

Got through half a can nothing yet. Cant see straight now either hahah
At least he won't get shellacked.
Every coin searchers dream.
Bet I could probably fill the holes left in our Washington Quarter dansco with those cans !!!!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Don't be surprised if you find little of any numismatic value. By 1966 circulating coins had been pretty much picked clean of anything good.
Wow... what a pile of silver....are there cans of halves as well?? If I had those cans of silver, I would have one more thing to procrastinate on....
Cheers, RickO
That's really fun. I once got a jar of Lincoln cents dated 1960 from a woman who was saving them, as she knew small dates from large dates had some value at one time. Who knows maybe today you'll find a 32-D or S. Best of luck
That would be fun to sort. Reminds me of how an old dealer friend of mine stored silver. He kept the buckets on the floor behind the counter. If someone wanted to search, he poured them out on a tray. He was asking 2.5X face value.
Sweet !!!
Very cool. 25K-30K fv is a lot of searching. He sat on those for 50 years, I hope you find a few nice ones to make it worth the time. I'll be checking back to see how you did!
So once you are done searching, what will you do with them? And mainly Washingtons & Roosies, or older coins as well? Any halves/dollars in the mix? I agree with the others.... searching thru them (which I last did thru coffee cans at the shops along "Smelters Row" in Philly as a kid) would be a little slice of heaven!
Finding a couple of transitional planchet errors would be a bonus.
I helped a dealer friend of mine search several thousand dollars face in 90% dimes and quarters. We ended up finding a lot of cool varieties and other stuff, including a 1934 DDO quater in VF, and XF 1950-D/S quarter, 2 1950 DDR dimes, and a 1921 Mercury in VG. It would get really boring at times, but then one of us would find something and we'd feel rejuvenated. The 1950 DDR dimes are what I really remember- I have searched for this variety for many years and never found one, then found 2 in this hoard within 5 minutes of each other.
Nice find. Hope you locate some interesting coins.
That's a great pic of some nice 90% silver

I would go crazy searching through all of those quarters. Hope you find something good.
Millions of coins, thousands of hoarders ... hundreds of collectors.... and only a few dozen searchers. Have fun.

Doubled dies, over mintmarks, type B's...endless possibilities.
These coins sat for 50 years? You're on virgin territory, lad! Good luck

REALLY!!!
Many years ago while I was at Harlan Berk in Chicago we had a guy come in with seven of the big metal cans full of 90% silver. His father had purchased them many years ago, but was now dead and the son would rather have the money. I think they were supposed to have $2,000 face in each, but I am not sure.
Bob opened two of them at random and we ran them through the coin counter and they checked out OK. Bob made a phone call and we offered the guy a price subject to us just taking a quick look in the other cans and the guy said OK. We were not going to run the rest of it through the counter, but just wanted to verify that there was silver in there.
The sixth can Bob opened was full of old pipe and other scrap metal equal in weight to whatever silver was supposed to be in there. We opened it in front of the guy so he could not say that we switched it. Obviously the father had been screwed many years earlier, but what are you going to do?

There was a small grocer in my hometown that saved silver in big toilet paper boxes in his backroom, ran that store for 50 years, but made his fortune selling $100k face during the Hunt ordeal. Drove it to NYC in a produce truck. Said he almost had a heart attack 5x on the trip, thinking his truck would break down.
Holy sh-nikes!
neat stories.

A great opportunity there. Good luck.
This gentleman would split a $1000 bag between 2 paint cans and mark them both with the same number. For instance 2 cans marked 20 together make 1000fv even folded up the bank sacks and put in a can. Cans were rusted shut. Very cool experience so far
That must have taken a lot of will power not to sell during the Hunt brothers buying spree to corner the silver market.

Way Cool!
Any old coin counters available for sale? Must be after all the small banks shut down after 08.
