1917 Buffalo Nickel. Here's what a full strike looks like.

Hammered is the best word to describe the strike. It's also a striking buffalo nickel :)
Looks like it's in a holder so what's the grade?

Yep-that one is ALL there! Like Tom I can see it as a 66.

    Ohhh,
That's tough but from what I can see it's a lofty grade. I'm sure it's above 65 at least it should be from the images. Very clean free of blemishes or distracting marks maybe better than a 66. If the luster's all there maybe a 67. It is a way above average coin.
    It's a beauty.

If it weren't for the slight die erosion, I'd think it might be one of the fabled 1917 proofs. ;)

This coin does not suck! But check out the buffalo's rugosity in HA archives.

@Killjoy here will refer you to a MARCA auction in maybe May 1985 in which appeared a 1917 5c in Matte Proof. Bought in a colluded $500 two-coin lot (the 27-s was an embossed-through-the-rim fake ) in a Bowers and Merena auction a few months previously by Jeff Garrett, John Dannreuther, Bill Nagel (Gene Gardner's buyer), @MrEureka and @myself. Brought 8K and change as I remember.

I am getting the obverse photo to demonstrate the fabric (thanks DWA) of the coin and but the image of the two reverse die characteristics has gone missing. Parenthetically, these show on all 1913-16 type II proof Buffs and the 1927 chrome-plated specimens (documents found 25+ years after the coins were bought in multi-coin lots in a colluded Harmer-Rooke auction by maybe 7 guys). Heritage photos available.

@MrEureka has seen one that was "more proof" in 1982. He also has a (cherished) personally embarrassing story to tell about me based on my proactive desire to get the fake off the market to the benefit of the hobby.

    Very nice. I don't see why it can't be a 67.
