1986 SILVER EAGLES

So when I look at information on Silver Eagles I never see any mention of variations on them other than BS and Proof. I was sorting mine out by year and noted one of them seems satin like, one like your typical ms-65 sheen to it, and the proof. Where there some that were produced early on with a different surface? The lids are off of the two cases on the left. (something on the lens on the one on the left)

    It looks to be just tarnish as they didn't make a different finish in 86. (the first year). only a proof and MS.

    2006 is when they started making a "burnished" finish version.

    Funny thing about eagles. I was looking in CoinFacts and took a screen shot. What's up ?

    The early years have some proof-like examples. The 1986 is the only one that I have seen graded with the pl designation (by NGC).

    NGC actually has this description about them:

    "1986 was the first year of the Silver Eagle series. The Mint was apparently testing different die preparation methods this year, as the mint state coins are often found in a multitude of different-looking finishes, including Proof-like as well as more matte examples."

    The non-satin (yet nowhere near proof like) appearance is found on many of the bullion business strikes well into the nineties. Almost a "glossy" vs. "flat" comparison. OP's question is very valid concerning the bulk bullion issues.

    Yes...there definitely were differences in '86... Though not declared differences..... Good examples shown in the OP..... Cheers, RickO

    This is true of all coins die prep. and die wear cause different looking coins. Even if there all called the same.
