I am in search of the owner of this 1886 Indian Head Cent. Does anyone know?

Tough coin. When I was in high school and was looking to complete a set of Indian cents, the 1886 Type II was only major variety I was never able to locate. The Type I was a disappointment too because it was only a VG when I wanted the set to be Fine or better. Back in those days, the 1960s, the 1885 was thought to be toughest date in the 1880s.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I've got this 1885. The 1886 has been located. :)

You can do a finger print match at the local Police Department.

    Nice looking coin :)

I usually don't care for fingerprints, but that one, with the color is cool.
    Reminds me of glacial markings.

Very attractive coin. It looks like it has tiger stripes. I am not a fan of fingerprints, but for me, this coin breaks the mold! It is also a S-9 variety.

    What is the S-9 variety?

It is a moderate re-punching of the 1 N. Snow -9. Here is the coin in its former holder.

There is also a die marker where the neck meets the chin. Snow says it is the easiest way to identify the variety. You can see it in my photo.

I have always been so drawn to the toning That I never really noticed the wire rims on the coin.
