To the person who turned in their old coins(bank)

TunisTunis Posts: 515 ✭✭✭✭

Thank you! My daughter and I have been trying to complete Whitman folders through searching rolls that we buy from our local credit union. We focus on the Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt albums. We typically buy 3 dime rolls, 2 nickel rolls and 2 penny rolls when we go. This is how I got started as a YN. She is 11 and nothing is more exciting for her to find a coin that "fits" her folders. She has found a few silver dimes and even found a Mercury dime that had her talking about it for weeks. Today she found 11 nickels, older than 1961 plus a Buffalo nickel!!! Talk about an 11 year old girl screaming. Her first Buffalo, to go with her first Mercury! Anyways, just wanted to let others know about our experience.

Imagine the late 1950s when it remained possible to assemble a complete set of Lincoln cents or buffalo nickels or Mercury dimes and WL halves from circulation.

The only one I didn't get from circulation was the S VDB. I still have my 1914 D.

That's how I started!!!! Pulling interesting coins out of circulation!! I remember going through a bag of nickels from the bank and discovering some had big letters over the Monticello. Buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes and wheat pennies were ALWAYS exciting. Especially if you could read the date!

Posted this on another thread but I will repost it here

Got a 1911 liberty head nickel in change at Dunkin Donuts this PM.

Interestingly, about 3 years ago I found an IKE dollar at this DD in the parking lot and about 1 year ago found a $20 dollar bill in the same lot.

I need to visit this location more often

Which one of you cashed this in for me to find ????

This is also how I started back in the '60's. But our source was bags of coins from the parking meters in Racine Wisconsin. A few of us kids would gather around a kitchen table and have a blast - especially if we found something to fill a hole in our Whitman folders (made down the street at Whitman). At that time I could only afford the cents, nickels, and dimes. At least the dimes were silver......

I also searched my father's pocket change. Although he never admitted it, I suspected that he salted his change with the occasional "keeper".

That is great... really enjoyable activity with one's child. Roll searching is still interesting, but finds are much more rare. Out of the last twenty rolls of halves I searched, I found one WLH... no silver Kennedy's.... ah for the days of my childhood when all dimes, quarters and halves were silver - and plentiful. Cheers, RickO

Many of the above stories mirror my old coin-collecting habits & successes as a kid, and remain the reason why I continue collecting in my blue Whitman folders to this day!! :)

It's fun finding an old coin in circulation. We should all be spending low value stuff for others to find.
