Rare or Junk?
I was hoping someone could help me out with this coin. I was going through a bag of steel pennies and came across this 1981 penny. At first I thought it was just altered with something but when I put a magnet over the 1981 penny and a normal penny the 1981 was the only one stuck to the magnet. I have seen pennies that have been altered before but this one has a very consistent look to it. I figure its most likely junk but I figured I would ask around to see if it may be worth submitting as it just seems like a weird one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like a novelty coin which has been plated. Take a look at EN in the word cent on the lower reverse. There's rub and the copper host underneath is peeking through the plating.
Logic dictates that somewhere along the line the copper cent was plated with a ferric metal during electrolysis. There are still hints of the original surface, the hits on the C in CENTS show the surface was coated 'after' that damage was created, so you have that as 'exhibit A'

What's the weight?
I also think it is not a Mint product... the letters are too 'mushy'.... No idea why it was produced, could be just an experiment... obviously fooled some people if it was in a bag of cents. Cheers, RickO
As far as being magnetic the plating has magnetic properties.
I appreciate all the responses. I guess this one will be heading to the local Coinstar.
Thanks again!
the top of the E in Cent is showing copper
I think the Coinstar machine will spit it out, especially if it's magnetic...
