I agree, I was a little concerned on how they would see the reverse:

Agreed on the 1832 Half Dollar. Did you opt for the Quarterly Special FREE Secure Plus with TrueView?

Did you send them in raw or in the ICG slabs? They are probably worth more in PCGS slabs even with the downgrades - right?

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,092 ✭✭✭✭✭

These were all sent in in the slabs, and usually I have not seen that have much of an effect. No special or fancy services requested like attribution or secure, etc.. It took a month to get done anyway. Imaging was by Tom Bush.

I recommend to all WHO DO NOT ASK...LOL. Never, never, never, send a coin from ANACS, ICG, or anyone else to NGC or PCGS for crossover. Otherwise, in most cases I hear/read about, the result will match yours. :(

Now in defense of NGC and PGGS, I've just heard that any coins sent in for crossover are cracked out and graded raw. I'm going to NGC this Friday and will find out.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,092 ✭✭✭✭✭

NGC will not cross non-PCGS coins, period. Is there any evidence that grading services are biased one way or another with Anacs or Icg, that pose no threat to their business?

  • Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

Thanks, so these went to PCGS. My advice still stands - crack-'em first.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,092 ✭✭✭✭✭

Then you could get an "improperly cleaned" result. BTW, the 1822 was once graded by NGC as AU details cleaned. I used a little acetone or Conserv to get off a little residue before sending it to Icg. Someone had dipped the portrait which does not mean "cleaned". The rest of the coin and another similar Bust coin had the same toned holder look.

    Never say never...

    1950 PCGS MS67 RD 1c (from ICG 67 RD under cross over special) - Value jump: $20 --> ~$1000

    1959 PCGS MS67 25c (from NGC 67 under cross over special) - Value jump: ~$300-$400 to $1200-$1500

I try to never write, never, always, etc. Your post is an example of why it is not a good idea. That is a beautiful Lincoln!

Once you get at or above 66 with the four services all bets are off because coins really have to have superior surfaces and eye appeal for grades over gem.

I don't believe this is the case at PCGS. Graders make a decision viewing through the holder (and are likely a little conservative over the possibility of hidden surprises). The coin moves to the next stage where it is cracked and slabbed with that grade.

I've been told the graders do not get another look at the coin after cracking in order to reconsider their earlier decision and maybe bump the grade. (I wish they would.)

I agree with you about cracking instead of crossing for all but those coins with the potential to bodybag. Interestingly, DW has publicly said the same thing. PCGS always prefers raw coins.

Good points, Lance. With top graders and the best optics I would think they could be pretty accurate.

I've crossed several ANACS coins to PCGS at grade or even getting a bump (+ and a full grade). And not just old white ANACS holders, but the new gold ones.

Buy/judge the coin, not the TPG.
