Well... for ME at least! ![]()
Got a birthday $100 bill from my Mom. Usually, I just toss gifts into the family checking account and use for whatever (usually the kids or wife).
But recently, I've gotten an idea into my head that maybe I should try & go somewhere (pawn shop, coin store, etc) and maybe pick up a bag of "melt" silver coins to go thru & possibly fill some holes.
Here's the catch, however.... unless I get EXTREMELY lucky, I won't be able to fill any remaining holes in my existing Whitman blue folders, as the only ones left are the harder to find & more expensive ones that I'm just not willing to shell out the money for, given all our other expenses.
So I was thinking maybe I could pick up a folder for SLQ's or Barber dimes/Q's and see of I could start any of those collections, since I never collected them before.
Do people still offer worn (but at least readable dates) bulk bags of "melt" silver of just those types, or am I way too late to get into the game? If not too late, any recommendations on where to get hold of them?
Thanks!

Ampex offers them at a small premium over more recent 90% silver
^^^^^ Good answer but should have been spelled APMEX.COM
Save up for a graded $5 gold commem at $300 or lower
Lafayette Grading Set
not sure that is a good idea.
buying low grade 90% you get the common date slicks.
Pay a bit more and get them in better condition without having so many dups that are very hard to get rid of!
Don't waste your money on 90% junk silver.
you probably could get a roll of barber dimes for that and have fun filling holes
I always spell apmex wrong also.............ampex just sounds better

Successful transactions with : MICHAELDIXON, Manorcourtman, Bochiman, bolivarshagnasty, AUandAG, onlyroosies, chumley, Weiss, jdimmick, BAJJERFAN, gene1978, TJM965, Smittys, GRANDAM, JTHawaii, mainejoe, softparade, derryb, Ricko
Bad transactions with : nobody to date
You could complete a Roosevelt set that way, but I doubt that any other series could be done from 90% junk silver. You could possibly come close with the Washington series but you would need lots of luck for the 32D and 32S
Barber and SLQ with dates go for a lot more than melt at the generic circulated level.
Even dateless SLQ will pull a small premium.
Thanks, all!
I would say if you wanna start barber halves, go for g-vg coins with full rims. Not challenging set, or expensive. Can be quite time consuming to find each date/mm with full rims at the G-VG levels.
Not the best example of the grade as rev rims is not the best. Tough date so I settled, but you get the idea.

I suggest back to school items for the kids. Clothes, supplies, shoes etc. Or a dozen roses for the wife. That pays off 100 fold over some junk silver
You are unlikely to fill holes from a 90% buy.... Then you have to either store it or resell it.. For $100, I would take the wife out to dinner or send her to a day of spa and massage.... Big ROI there...
Cheers, RickO
Done (finally!) with school years for the kids, and money already allotted to keeping the wife happy, too! Time for pampering ME for a change!
Ampex was a pioneering company in magnetic tape tech, both audio and video.
If you had access to a good tape recorder a few decades ago, you probably had an Ampex. It was pretty much an industry standard.
We now return to your junk silver thread...
ALL silver is....junk.
