Struggled to get the time off this year for the ANA. Had to leave late Wed. and got into Denver at 2AM. ![]()
Boiler78 was kind enough to share a room and didn't even get mad with my arrival time.
Had a great time walking the bourse and seeing a lot of nice coins, though not as many monsters as in years past. Nice time catching up with Regulated, MrEureka, Julian, Shamhart, CJ and parents, Mike Kittle, David Schwager, Ian at GC, CRO, BluVette, YN Kellen, TahoeDale and Stacie, JD, Joe O'Conner, Ducker, Rick/Kenney Snow, Brian Wagner, Dino and others I'm sure to insult by forgetting everyone!,
Seeing the Type 2 Quint at Kagins was a real treat. It generated quite a buzz at the show and Kagin's table.
While I did some auction lot viewing, there wasn't much for me in the auctions (previewed before the show). I can't ever recall not attending a live session at the ANA!
Thursday @ 5:30 David Schwager had called together a meeting of sample collectors. While the turnout was small, we had a good time chatting and sharing samples and stories. David was kind enough to bring me a PCGS box I needed, shown next to a NGC box for comparison. .

After the Sample meeting, we headed to Morton's for the US Rare Gold Collectors meeting. There some collectors there that are always fun to catch up with and this years speaker was Jeff Garrett speaking about the Smithsonian collection. He was kind enough to hand out a book to attendees that he co-wrote, "1849 - The Philadelphia Mint Strikes Gold". A new member included Mr. Hansen of recent type set fame. It was fun to meet the new people and catch up with the veteran members to include the folks from HA and SB there and on the bourse.
Friday I was able to buy a $1000 note from Meredith at Kagins. Not sure why but I've wanted one for a long time!

During the show PCGS was promoting it's Market Report Magazine and was giving away 5 "samples" to promote it. The 1st day was a generic slab, 1000 made. The ensuing days where signed samples by Ron Guth, Mike Sherman, Phil Arnold and David Hall, 250 of each. If you were leaving early, they would give you all 5 at once, o/w you had to wait. By Fr/Sat, they were out of Guth and Sherman slabs. It didn't take long for these to be selling on eBay for more than I wold have expected!

Friday was spent on the bourse with the PCGS luncheon at 11:30. Smaller than usual attendance, Luncheon slab with edition of 160 featuring a CO quarter. It was entertaining, especially listening to Kevin Lipton's Dealer Hall of Fame acceptance speech. I would have loved to hear some stories that would have come out with a smaller, more intimate audience.

The sample being given out at PCGS was the 2017 Shield Penny.
Went out to a seafood restaurant for dinner. We all wanted to taste the chicken fried lobster entree so ordered it for an appetizer - surprisingly good! A local collector who was displaying his proof sets at the show joined us and it was a good time.
Sat. was more of the same. Boiler messed up and had a 6AM flight instead of 6PM (surprise!!) so no golf. Spent more time on the bourse before heading to the airport. There was an impressive thunderstorm blowing through so most late afternoon and evening flights were delayed, including mine.
No major coin purchases this week for me but I do have 2 I'm contemplating after seeing them at the show, both in the 50K range. If I pull the trigger, will update the report. ![]()

Nice report and thanks for posting!
Was the $1000 bill a free sample?
It was great seeing you at the show - I had no idea that Meredith sold you a note!

Well done!
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
Great report and pickups. Glad you were able to pick up something you've wanted and the Sample Slabs sound like an All*Star set!
nice report, fed note, and samples.
Thank you for the interesting show report.
Was it Monty Hall that would tempt contestants with $1,000 bills on 'Let's Make a Deal'?

Good seeing you too Tim !
Nice report!
Thanks for sharing.
I've wanted a $1000 (or even a $500) bill for awhile. Not gonna happen any time soon though. Mind if I share in yours?
You have it every other M-W-F, and I'll have it weekends and the other days......
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Great report. Wish you would have seen more holders, but the $1,000 is a great pickup. I've long wanted one of those, or a $500. I feel like I should learn how to grade paper money first.
great report
It was nice meeting you.
