Hasn't the subject of the Michigan coin been changed from the original announcement? I thought it was going to be Isle Royal (the eye of the wolf in Lake Superior).

    All glory is fleeting.

Bird is one of the most popular collectible themes among collectors of all type since civilization. I won't be surprise that collectors from all over the world step in if this pattern continue.

For years and years, It has been killing people at the U.S. Mint not to copy the Canadian Loonie dollar coin. Now they've finally done it.

Nice designs, but there seem to be way too many rocks & lakes & birds............ need a bit more originality, in my estimation. Of course, I'll still have to go after them to keep our collections up-to-date........

They should have put a beaver on the Voyageurs coin. Beaver is one of the reasons why the border lakes were travelled so heavily. (Before they mined iron there.)

We have plenty of birds on coins, how many beavers?

What else do you think they have in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan that can go on an ATB coin?

The common loon is the state bird of Minnesota, so I don't think it's out of place here.

A loon was on the Minnesota 50SQ. Beavers. Beavers would have been good. Maybe a muskie or a walleye...

I used to have a t-shirt with that joke on it. Go up to the BWCAW in May/June, and you'll understand why... :)

On the original design for the Minnesota State Quarter, there was both a canoe with two men in it as well as a loonie - both clear references to the Canadian dollar designs - and there was no State outline. The canoe and the loonie were rather larger without the State outline.

However, the canoe had only one paddler, and the other man was standing up, with a fishing pole! When it was pointed out that standing up and fishing in a canoe was borderline ludicrous, the design got considerably reworked.

This is why I say that the Mint has been wanting to do a copy of the Canadian loonie design for years and years. The Minnesota quarter has most of the elements of the proposed 2018 quarter already, just smaller.

Perhaps there is nothing new under the sun, but the but the U.S. Mint is obviously bereft of new design ideas.

Putting birds on coins avoids problems. Think about it. If a duck is on a coin the hawks will not complain about why hawks are not depicted. Likewise, crows could care less if a dove is on a coin. Sparrows would have no problem with hummingbirds on coins. Putting people on coins these days can be quite touchy and controversial. People types enjoy complaining about other people types. Birds on coins is the safe way to go. It avoids all the PC nonsense.

I actually like the Minnesota coin, but worry the multi-shaded neck of the loon will lose something in translation to the actual coin. And as far as the GA design is concerned, are they allowed to have anything (wing-tip) protruding out into the outer ring, or will that be re-worked/cut?

What we need is a coin with a flying squirrel on it, you know like Rocky
