I am off to the Smithsonian on 7/22.

If anyone has a particular piece that they know is on exhibit let me know and i will try to get a picture as I have gotten a good camera with lots of capacity. All I can promise is I will try my best to get the picture. I will post what I got that I think the forum would like when I return in a week id some very rare coins are on display. Do not know what will be on exhibit but I am going to request a look at a 13 V. Buy law you can request and have a right to see anything they have as Federal money funds the show. Only problem is you have to provide them with " ( reasonable ) time prior to coming and I tried to call and got nothing but recordings or full mail boxes.

I'll check this thread at 8:30 A. M CST on 7/22 prior to heading for the airport.

Enjoy your trip. I was there a couple of years ago and took a few pics. The quality photos will be hard to come by as you will be taking them through at least one layer of glass. Check out the crude ways they fasten these priceless coins to the display cases.

User @nibanny posted many photos from his 2010 visit showing what was on public display at that time - it is probably about the same. You can see 4 pages of small thumbnails at:

Yes, the Norweb 1913 V nickel should be on display.
So are many of the classics like a couple of 1804 dollars and an 1849 $20.

I have seen some images of the "wire prongs" that are used to hold some coins, without Cointains or protective measures...I believe it was the Smithsonian collection.

Thanks for the rapid responses and advise. I'll do the best I can and post a few of the better photos if there are any when I am back.

Have a great time. The Smithsonian is vast... to see it all, one would need a couple of months... of course, most people are not interested in everything. It is a fantastic repository of American treasure... I think everyone should endeavor to visit at least once. Cheers, RickO

Was in D.C. Last week and there are two collections on display at the National Museum of American history with a '33 Saint and lots of other cool stuff. Also saw the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner. I took no pics of the coins but got this St. Gaudens statue at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier.
