Okay, right off the bat, I....KNOW.....we all probably mix it up and do ...both....but for battle preparations, the lines will be drawn by your MAJOR interest.

Ready troops? GO.... :D

When you say sets and SET/S in the actual poll, are you referring to date sets? Type sets vs. Date sets?

If I could do only one, it would be type sets, but I do have several date sets too...coin-wise it's probably a 50-50 split, just because numerically the date sets have more coins involved. The mentality is more like 75-25.

Interesting way of looking at collecting approach though, 'a little of this, a little of that' vs. 'all of just a bit'.

edited to add: Since I collect so much non-US stuff that is why I have more than one kind of type set.

First, I like all coins/tokens/medals including deceptive counterfeits so my vote does not count. As a matter of fact why should I waste your time posting with an opinion here! Palm slap.

There are very good reasons to collect either way. However, I was told by a long-time curator at a major museum that if he could do it all over, he would do a Type Set as it would be more interesting to non-collectors who never heard of a 3c coin for example. Another thing he did not mention is that your "eggs" would not be in one basket.

As a novice, my dream was to do a type set using the rare coins of every series like 1856 FE 1c, 1909-S VDB, Proof 1895 Morgan, 1870-CC 25c, 1927-D $20, etc. - all in the best condition. LOL! I just woke up from that dream.

Yes I do a little of both.

Well, my current collecting interests consist of a US type set and a date/mm set of Peace dollars. I've spent roughly equal $$ amounts on both but there are more coins in the type set of course. I don't see how I could be more evenly split between both camps. :)

I just sold the Peace set though (but I'm working on another). :)

As a rather compulsive person, I prefer to have an entire date set. However, monetary restrictions do not allow me to so, and therefore I voted for type sets.

I have a complete type set, at least as defined by the NGC registry. I worked on it for fifty years.

I have sets of gold dollars (Types I and II), Indian $2.50 and the Classic Head $5 gold. I'd like to finsh the Classic Head 2.50 gold coins. I like short date and mint sets. The long ones like Morgan Dollars and Liberty $2.50 coins would not hold my interest long enough to finish, and are too expensive any way.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm assembling a complete set of laurel wreath reverse Indian head cents. No type collecting for me!

Date sets for me. I can't afford the full sets of Buffalos, Mercurys, or Peace Dollars in Mint state. I look for high color coins or full strikes to add a little bit of a challenge.

I do, however, have a type set of doubled dies and and a type set of color coins from the 20th century so I guess, technically, I collect both.

I am bored by some types. I like to focus on a series and really get to know it.

With a Type Set you'll only have one example of each coin that you hate.

    What Lance said.

Series collecting is way, way more interesting (and challenging), at least for me, IF you pick the right series.

Pursuing my niche set far more aggressively than my type set.

I get bored looking at the same coin over and over again...that is why I like Type Sets. No offence to those who like Series Sets, that is entirely up to you.

I would have answered "yes" if that were an option, but collecting a series fits better. Looking at the sets I have, two, Morgans and Classic Commems, are probably among the most popular series to collect. While my Classic Commem set is the 50-coin type set, as I continue to lose money on it, maybe I'll double down and do the Oregon and Texas series, too. One of my other sets, my Prime Number set, is a US type set until the dates get too early, then it starts meandering around western Europe and the rest of the Americas.
