The "Coin UNO" (or "Follow the Leader") game thread - BY THEME!

You are likely familiar with the "Coin Uno" megathread, which has been running for more than a decade.

Now it is time for a new twist.

This time, we'll start with a certain theme. The next person to post a coin that fits the theme in play gets to name a new theme.

Anything goes (coin, token, or medal, ancient or modern, dated or not), as long as it follows the same theme as the item posted before it.

So if someone posts a coin with a bird on it, and declares the theme to be "birds", the next person has to post a coin, medal, or token with a bird on it. If they do, they then have the right to declare the next theme.

See? Simple.

Simple, that is, as long as everyone keeps the themes themselves simple. So let's have themes like "birds" or "animals" or "aircraft" or "lions" or "mythical beasts" or "coins with holes in the middle" or "non-round coins" or "colorfully toned coins" or "people with hats".

Not overly-complicated themes like "Massey Ferguson GC1700 Series Tractors". ;)

Follow the leader and see what the theme in play is. If you can post an item with that theme, then you get to post a second item of your own to start a new theme.

If nobody follows a theme within 24 hours of its being posted, then anybody is free to post a new theme.

Confused? Have a look at the CoinTalk version of this to see how it works.

    I'll begin.

    NEW THEME: people with swords

Belgium (Brabant): gold florin (Carolus d’or) of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, ca. 1521-1545

    REPLY: people with swords.

German States (Teutonic Order): silver 1/4-thaler of Grand Master Maximilian of Austria, ca. 1615

This means I get to pick a new theme since I successfully met the challenge of matching the old theme.

    NEW THEME: OWLS

Ancient Greece (Spartans in Taras, Calabria, Italy): silver drachm, Athena and owl, ca. 302-281 BC

So the next person who posts a coin, token, or medal with an owl on it may choose the next theme, or stick with owls.

I'll play next. This has an owl:

Because I'm lazy (and this is how I like playing this thread on the other forum), I will use the same coin (medal or jeton in this case) to pick the next theme. The next theme will be dogs. It could have been 'seated dude with wings', 'Loos', 'cornucopia', or tin (if it is indeed tin, which I don't know). However, I like dogs, so dogs is it.

There ya go! Thanks for getting us started.

Alas, I have no photographed "dog" - themed pieces.

Almost certainly have one of those Irish sixpence coins with the wolfhound on 'em, but no pix of it.

Anybody wanna play a doggie? Then you can pick the next theme (either by using another feature of the same coin you just posted, like @stork just did here - or by posting a second coin for the new theme, as I did above.)

    Ok, I'll try.

This one has some dogs on it... famous trained dogs!

And for the next theme to match, how about something else with a boat on it!

    :+1:

    Here's a boat (or several):

Now how about a post with a building on it:

A building (and not far from the previous building):

For a new theme, how about horses:

  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,885 ✭✭✭✭✭

    A horse, of course. :)

Now, since the takeaway I got from @iosephus' latter post was not so much horses as hats, let's do hats next:

Here is a horse, on the reverse of a 1889 Crown:

The new theme is cats, like this 2017 Canada Lynx:

My apologies for the low quality pictures.

@Jackthecat1 - I had changed the theme from horses to hats.

But since your avatar has a hat, and I like cats, we'll roll with your theme. Cats it is.

New theme, same coin: city views.

One (minor) issue with these threads is when people post near the same time (it can take a while to get a photo ready to go...) or miss a whole page. Easily corrected though :).

So, here is a city view:
    image

and, let's go with bridges next. Post a coin/medal with a bridge.

  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,885 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes, it can get hard to keep up when a picture-post-progression thread like these get busy.

This one hasn't, yet, though it seems to be doing fine on CT. Maybe the CU Dark side has just gotten sleepy.

    Here's a bridge.

Next up, using the same coin, let's have "love tokens or engraved pieces", next.

Sorry about that, Lord M. You must have posted while I was taking my not very good pictures.

OK if I understand it right we're doing engraved coins? I made it for my wife.

The engraving came from a picture and signatures drawn by my kids. Scanned, digitized and encoded into the engraving machine.

Next, someone post a coin with a personification of Liberty.

Really enjoying collecting coins and currency again

    That is totally awesome. <3

I've been a bit slow to try and play on this thread. I was trying to think of which of my non-US material literally uses 'Liberty' (vs. their own like Marianne etc). I gave up. Here is my most recent Liberty.

My collection of US coins/medals is much lower than anything else, and the number of things I've bought from the US Mint directly is exceedingly low (maybe 3-4 things in the last 10 years, and one of those got returned), but I liked this one, oversized stars and all.

    Liberty (and an Eagle)

Iceland 2 Kr. Reverse includes Eagle, plus a Giant, a Bull and a Dragon

Normally I'd just use the Liberty medal for calling the next theme, but this is the darkside afterall and I wanted to throw a non-US coin in there too :D!

    Next theme is Eagle.
