Thank you, Photobucket!

While I initially viewed the Photobucket policy change as a disaster, it now appears as a blessing in disguise.
It forced me to review the several sample threads and make the edits and changes that I had been putting off.
In the process of downloading images to PCGS, I also abandoned all Imgur pics, assuming they will follow PB some day.
Will include a coin/sample so this thread isn't worthless! ![]()

Advice from a professional photographer......
Make your own cloud by buying at least two (I have 6) external hard drives and put all your important images on each drive. This is to say, each drive will have the exact SAME images.
Most sites like CU will let you upload images directly from your cloud.
Cloud? In my area of the world, they're just called "backups".
I keep my working set on my live drives, and keep four complete, generational copies of my image database on separate hard disks, kept in two separate places. Paranoia from 40 years of computing...
how long before CLCT starts charging for image hosting? I mean if everyone kills their photobucket account and hosts it here, doesn't that add costs to CLCT? Or is the amount of collectors and the size of their aggregate images just so small anyway?
Never, PCGS gets so much goodwill from this site it will always be free with free image hosting, it is a good business decision.
Yep, makes it easy to post a high quality picture here, but other places might require a work around, or not quite as good an image. Makes posting here more attractive and user friendly.

The only issue I see with recommending the identical hard drives is that some places on the internet still aren't allowing direct uploads or are limiting quality (my dog website of preference is terribly strict for example). So uploading still doesn't work unless I do create my own cloud site, which isn't happening any time soon.
I also like, in addition to the hard drive back up(s), at least one remote cloud based one too. So, main computer/hard drive back up locally/rotate another couple hard drives to keep one stored off premises at all times/one cloud based (carbonite, icloud, amazon, google, whatever)
If things get tight maybe they will have a bot that scans pics and kicks them off if they see an ATS label
my PB is gone, being held for ransom
BHNC #203
Years ago, I was a paid member of PB. I used the service, because it was a service back then, so I was happy to pay the small amount they requested. When they started getting goofy, 6, 7, 8 or 9 years ago....I ran away......
You say it in jest! But actually, ATS (in sleepy hollow, which really got fubar'd as now the coins, comics, etc. boards seem entirely disconnected from each other) -- there is the CGC message board for comics grading. They have a particular rival, CBCS (founded by the ex-president of CGC, Steve Borock, as standup and nice a guy as you'd ever want to meet) that they particularly frown upon having any graded comic originating from them posted. If it surrounded by the competitor's plastic (only that "legit" competitor, that is) it needs to be cropped to just showing the comic, or else!
It can be a touchy world in the field of graded collectibles!
Thats step one , step 2 is the bot checks to see if the coin in the pic is raw and pops up a dialog box , click OK to have this coin graded , Click EXIT to sign off .
Wow... looks like my lack of photo skills has saved me problems. I do use separate hard drives though... to store information important to myself/family. Yep, even some pictures....My wife stores most of those though...she knows I am a klutz when it comes to pictures. Spent my life traveling and living in different countries and across America - and have very few pictures to show for it. Strangely, I always had a camera, still do.. a Canon AE-1.... just never use it. Cheers, RickO
P.S. I also have avoided - mostly - having MY picture taken.... Cheers, RickO
Canon AE1.. you are dating yourself...
Can you still buy film for it?
The other alternative no one seems to talk about, is getting free web space someplace, and hosting your own images from that web site.
If the free hosting service provides a generic hostname, then you're good to go.
(I maintain a non-indexed tmp directory on my website, and host my own images on a lot of sites. Did it all the time here before CU got their own image server.)
