Original Government Packaging - Is it too much?

I love collecting coins but have begun to realize I'm also collecting lots of boxes. It seems like the government overpacks some coins. You open a box to find another box, and inside that one, another box (usually wooden), and finally find your coin. What is the real value of all these boxes anyways? They really eat up a lot of space. I almost want to separate my coins from the clutter and store the OGP in another room...that would certainly make looking at my coins much easier. These boxes are useful to hold certificates of authenticity and keeps the coins from rattling around. I guess I'll just keep my coins in the
original box in a box in a box and then keep them all in a bigger box.

In many modern us series, coins with OGP worth as much as slabs in ms/pr 69.
As for myself, I like to storage coins and boxes in two different locations for easy viewing without damage the packaging every time I decide to check some coin porn in the middle of the night.
Lets be honest, we are coin and not dust collectors. How often would you view your coins through out your life span if your collection was always concealed in a box?
I think part of the reason people slab moderns is so they have a reason to toss all that garbage. It doesn't help that the mint doesn't stick with a set form factor , everything is different shapes sizes and even colors . It's idiotic
That about sums it up. After I had a couple of bigger boxes full of smaller boxes which contained the inner box holding the coin, I decided that was enough. I sold them all off and reinvested in a few nice PCGS certified coins. My biggest complaint with the government product was that there was too much of it to keep up. It is not like the days when one mint set and one proof set covered everything.
Yep... was a minor contributor to my discontinuing buying mint/proof sets....that, plus the fact they mostly just sit there. I keep the original packing on special sets - like the Philadelphia set and others. Also, proof AGE's and ASE's. Sure does take up space though.....not as much as firearms though...

I get rid of all the boxes or otherwise I would have more than a thousand and no way they fit in all the safety deposit boxes at the bank, or even in my garage. I often wonder if the boxes are designed and sourced by Mint or Congress insiders for profit. I think they are a huge waste of space,, money, and resources. Probably all made in China, but I do not know that for sure.
I have sent the Mint several requests in their surveys to have a small box to check when ordering to say if you want a OGP box or not, with a discount if you do not want one, just the coins in the capsule and plain holder to protect it. I bet 80% or more of the people would say no box, if the coins were cheaper.

True they probably have a huge margin on the packaging , and somebodies brother in law has that gig so its here to stay. If anything doesn't quite make sense where the government is concerned it probably means some well connected parasite is making a fortune off it .
The Mint and their packaging (not to mention their seigniorage)...... it's like printing money!!!
