Update. Coins in-hand........ Can anyone guess who the dealer and who the collector are?

I talked to a dealer yesterday who described 2 coins to me over the phone. I've never seen even a photo of the coins. After a short discussion, I asked him to send them to me. He offers a return privilege of course, but I would be astonished if it is needed. The coins are being offered above CU price guides.

The coins are from a recent dealer e-mail listing and they come from a well-known collector. Why would I be foolish enough to do such a thing? ;)

Think you're missing the point here.
To my knowledge, the dealer doesn't do the forum. Plus, he refers to the collector by name in his email.
If you're not aware about what we are referring, Maybe it best you don't comment.

I have no clue, so I will guess they're underpriced for the grade and I'm sticking to my opinion without a leg to stand on. Oh, and +1 in my personal quest of reaching 50,000 posts.

    au contraire

I once posted RYK's name here and he was quick to let me know that he thought the move was out of bounds. Also a PM from the top stated that posting a member's real name here was frowned upon. Ask Don if you don't believe me. An email can only be read by those to whom it was sent which I assume was limited distribution. These boards can be read by millions whether they are members here or not. Email content is not generally considered to be in the public domain.

Again, you're are missing the point and have no clue about what the OP refers. I think I do and answered the OP's question.
Please just wait for the OP to respond to see if I'm right. Thank you!

Doug Winter and RYK. The offering started about 2 hours ago all but a couple of coins are sold or on hold.

I bet you'll hear from RYK hizself. If you link an article that's in the public domain with his name in it, it's one thing. If you post a person's name that was provided by private means, it's frowned upon here UNLESS you have the person's permission to post it. that's my point.

I was advised not to do it and am just passing along a little friendly advice.

RYK is probably the first and most astute collector of original surface rare gold coins to be active on this forum, this wonderful group must be difficult for such a passionate numismatist to relinquish.

Being also accomplished in family, friends, career, and a range of hobbies including travel and sports, no doubt the funds from this sale will go toward exciting new experiences and stuff..

..maybe even a fewer number of dream trophy coins??

    Maybe.
To me, the 1799 $5 is a trophy coin! I would love to own it.

I was late to the party. My top three or four interests were already gone.... on several I would have been 4th or 5th in line.... and this before any photos had been released or the actual sale "went live."

Baley's comments are in-line with my own thoughts. I have a couple of RYK's earlier "castoffs" and they're fabulous. Congrats to him for a successful sale and best of luck with whatever follows.

Whatever your area of specialty, a collection that generates this sort of interest at sale time is a lofty goal.

As far as the etiquette debate, both sides have reason to say what they did, but in this case the sale promo included his full name. Hopefully this was a conscious decision on RYK's part. Discretion is always wise, but in this case it wasn't all that difficult to figure it out.

AFAIK there is an unwritten rule here that you don't post another member's real name [first name only is ok I believe] unless you have their personal permission to do so. The fact that it was included in a private limited distribution email, does not constitute said permission.

FWIW, I was finally able to see photos. No buyer's remorse yet. :) What an outstanding grouping of coins.

I've been eyeing the Moffat, and I'm also surprised it was one of just a few left by 2p Sat.

I love the toning on the 1852-C. Looks similar to a few of mine that everyone seems to think is AT (but I don't!). If I had a little more cash on hand I would buy the Moffat.

@RYK You were gracious to me several years ago to sell your A&R half that I treasure to this day. Regarding your fund raising, all the best to you!

So, these two showed up today. They're both pretty darn nice. Neither coin is actually a DOG, but they're both great examples of type.

    image

The Saint demonstrates rich color and glowing luster that easily carries the grade. The surfaces have that deep, pebbly flashy luster that has tremendous depth. The small hits probably define the grade but they're not easy to spot in-hand.

    image

The 1907 NM is a type coin I've desired for a while. It really isn't all that different than the later issues..... but somehow it is. Even so they get expensive pretty quickly in MS grades. This one has the look of a much higher-graded coin. It has more of a creamy luster and is quite a bit more yellow than the Saint. There are some very light, vertically-oriented parallel hairlines on both sides that are tough to see. I suppose this is an overall "net grade" but in this case to me it seems just right. A "details, cleaned" designation would be far too harsh for a coin with this eye appeal but a 64 grade probably wouldn't be quite right either. It would be hard to find a nicer coin at the price point.

That $10 Indian is a real beautiful coin... looks so much better than a 62... that creamy luster is awesome. Cheers, RickO
