1927-S Peace Dollar

Just took some coins out of my secret underground bunker to see what would catch my eye, and this NGC 62 certainly did. I'm a smart Dogwood for having bought it because it's certainly pleasing to look at. So I thought I'd post it for people to see.
I know folks are busy discussing the state and future of the coin market and CAC and stuff so I'll add a little editorial interest to keep it HOT. What is up with this date such that a 65 costs $9000 but a 65+ is $26,000? Really, that's an insane 200% premium for a +.
So just the hint that it could be cracked a few times and end up in a 66 holder is worth a $16,000 spin of the wheel?!
Back to actual coins.
There's an interesting read in Coinfacts about this date wherein it was explained that several original bags were released in the '50's but they just plopped back into circulation like nothing of it. That's fun history. Before my time so no regrets.
Feel free to post a nice 27-s if you wish. It'd be interesting to see others, especially Gems.

To what?
I made no mention of my opinion of the (largely fair and correct) 62 grade, if that's what you mean.
A very pleasant coin regardless. I assume RB meant not close to original. I'm not sure how he jumps to that conclusion, as the toning does not appear to be NT or added willy nilly. Not my series but again the eye appeal is very high and a nice coin.
Also, I agree about your opinion of the "+" adding 200% being ridiculous when they can be out a full grade or even two on occasion. Even worse on foreign coins where I have seen them be up to three off. Well, that's a part of how dealers make money.

Well, just Love coins, period.
I can see a 62.... mainly on the obverse... the reverse seems to have wear or weak strike...Cheers, RickO
Nice coin! 1927-s is one of the harder coins to obtain In mint state for sure.
It looks like a sympathy grade with what appears to be counting machine damage over GOD. Without that, if your images are right, that sucker looks 65!
Your coin has a nice look, especially for the assigned grade. When it comes to Peace dollars, luster is an important key determinant to grade - one of the hardest things to evaluate in a photograph, especially with a toned coin. I think this is what frustrates people trying to correlate grades and photos.
I can tell you the 65+ may have a "book" value of $9k in 65 and $26k in 65+, but today I don't think a 5+ would really trade above $16-$18. Still, it's a huge jump, but one that is possibly justified....... at PCGS there are 83 graded at 65, only 5 at 65+ and only 2 graded 66 (subject to the usual caveats with crackouts, etc). That puts it in pretty rare company. The 27-S was a poorly made coin with the typical poor strike common to San Fransisco issues.
I don't own either of these any more. The first one is fairly graded, I think, with a few hits and a bit of subdued luster. There is a reverse toning patch at 1 o'clock that distracts a bit too. Luster is decent but strike is soft...... not a gem, but not so far off either.
The second coin is one that I was both stupid and smart about. I saw it in a dealer's case and under the lights it just absolutely stood out among the other coins. The toning is obvious, but the luster in-hand is really special. The combined effect is really something....... but I had already spent my budget at the show!
A few months later my situation had improved and the coin was still available, but at a higher price...... I took a deep breath and said "just send it to me." When I sold my set I sent a few coins in for regrade and this one came back at a 65+. I thought the grade was fully justified.
The coin isn't perfect and it has a couple scattered hits and such..... I see it as a technical 65 with special eye appeal. Compared to its peers, it's phenomenal.
Not close to the various "upgrades" proffered.
Thanks for all of the comments.
Bryce thanks for the post.
That 65+ is superb. I think if the hair was struck up more that could move up to the next slot, as the eye appeal carries the day with that one. But again, here we are, and it could different to someone else's eyes
Wabbit thanks for the note about counting machine damage, probably the first time I've really thought about what that might look like. Really does a number on a coin.
Such is the life of a thing never meant to be preserved in perfection.

Looking at that hair. Thumbs up! Sweet.

Nice coin. I am currently on the lookout for a nice 27-S and 24-S. Both seem to be typically unattractive.
