Longtime lurker

I have been reading the boards for over three years now, and learned a lot. Recently there have been a few threads that I would've commented on, however"who knew that registering and getting approved would take a few days". Anyways as many of the conversations have pertained to the status of the market and what newer collectors think, I will give my perspective. So in no particular order:
1). Threads like the recent on regarding hairlines are awesome, probably impact a much larger audience then many would guess(lurkers like me) and can lead to simple collectors become more advance and becoming a bigger part of the hobby passing on to the next generation. So thanks to those of you who take time to write the educational threads.
2) Status of the market. I definately think the market is in a downturn, and I am becoming more pessimistic that it will recover. The reason I say this is collectors like me, are likely getting turned off by many things going on. The biggest is the "making the hobby to much like corporate business". Hobby's are supposed to be about having fun and escaping from day to day irritants. However what I now see is:
-auction houses continually raising there fees, likely to satisfy corporate investors and targeted returns
-TPG's adding services or gimmicks to once again increase sales and corporate returns.
-companies now verifying TPG grades and expecting to make returns,
-dealers trying to make their returns....
-(side note, for certain coins, I support TPG to avoid doctored or counterfeit coins)
So you have multiple entities all trying to get their slice of the pie, and the one expected to in the end pay the bill is the collector. While many of us don't mind an entity making a fair return for their investment, there are too many middleman and expenses incurred between many of the products and the end collector. To me, this all feels like the corporate world at I live in everyday. I don't want to deal with it in a hobby. As I just got one of the last coins I was looking for,in my simple collection, I am debating if I should continue or pursue another hobby, the jury is still out.
3). Things that give me some hope.
-I never really used BST before, however I have noticed that some of the veteran posters/collectors that dabble in selling their duplicate or upgraded coins appear to offer good value plus willingness to educate buyers on their coins.
-returning to lower cost raw coins, for simple pleasure of collecting
Oh yeah as for me...<50 year old; first goal was graded CC Morgan's in VG-VF, last coin is enroute, second goal in process was a graded type set no,particular grades, just nice examples for the grade 40% complete, however that may be abandoned as just got a 7070 and may go back to lower level raw coins.
So ere you have it...in summary, achieved my first goal that I had when I returned 4ish years ago, due to,what I feel is an over corporatized ion of the market, I am at a crossroads as to whether I will continue or invest more time and money in activities/memories then in coins.
Once again, thanks for a great forum.

When people are making accounts simply to say this, we are close to a bottom. Glad I have been buying like crazy.
Also, as long as you are not one of the newly booted or glick making more accounts, welcome.

That's a good first post.....Welcome.......
Thanks for the welcome. I am not a newly booted member, just figured after years of getting information from the board, that I would provide my perspective of whats going on as food for thought.
Welcome.
Glad you signed up.

"Welcome To The Best Coin Forum Available."
There are so many Experts and Authors who will gladly share their knowledge with you.
What I really like is that a $10.00 coin and it's owner are treated with the same respect as someone asking an opinion on a $10000.00 coin.
If it was glick he would have 10 threads on page 1 and 10 posts in each
Thanks for joining and posting.

Welcome! I've been lurking on here since 2003/2004 before I finally decided to pull the trigger.
This is a better social networking site than where our president hangs out . And two billion people on that other site has more lurkers than participants . Ebay sucks, but where else can a guy earn a You Suck award ? Okay , my rant is over. Welcome aboard.

Welcome. Pull up a chair grab a beer and complain about anything and everything and you'll fit in nicely. I'm only busting your chops. Nice first post.
Regardless this place is starting to remind me of my childhood when my dad used to haul me off to the Knights of Columbus while he tended bar. I still remember Walt Gursky complaining to Louie Idosnesi about his dentist charging him $80 for extensive bridge work and my Dad saying he should sue his a$$. And Louie Idosnesi lifted his head from
the bar to say, "yah, sue his a$$".
Yep Wabbit the bottom is near.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Nice post! Welcome! Buy stuff! Enjoy stuff! Learn stuff!
Feel free to rant on occasion.
Above all, help all of us have fun!
Thanks for the input and hanging around. I have also learned a lot.
I believe that the hobby will always continue and I hope it continues to be an enjoyment to you as well.!.!
@SimpleCollector .... Welcome aboard. Congratulations on completing your CC set. Many of your concerns are valid. However, coin collecting has been around far longer than any of us (and some of us have been around forever
), and will continue. I agree that costs have escalated and certainly your reasons stated have contributed. However, there seems to be a mild correction occurring right now. Not sure how far it will go. Also, the BST is a great resource, have purchased some nice coins there. If you truly love collecting coins, you will continue. If something else calls you, then you should pursue that. As you said, it is a hobby, so it should be enjoyable and relaxing. Please continue to contribute.... Cheers, RickO

Great post and welcome.
I hear ya about the hobby seeming more like an industry. The boards here are definitely skewed to the dealer / advanced collector (whatever that is) / investor side of things. There's no getting around that some of what we collect is amazingly expensive and a person simply must consider the implications of that. A down market takes much of the fun out of it for everyone.
None of the guys in my local club have noticed though. It's pretty rare for them to buy a slabbed coin.
Welcome and thanks for posting.
Congrats on completing your CC dollar set Those CC dollars make up a big part of silver dollar history and I don't think there is a much better feeling than holding one of those circulated pieces of history in your hand. Where has it been and what stories could it tell?
I've been a collector on and off since the mid to late 1950s and just joined this forum a few months ago. I'm glad I did. It is more active than anything out there related to coins and there is always something new to learn about the hobby.

Welcome to the forum (as a poster, anyway). Don't worry about market peaks and crashes; you sound like a real collector who is primarily interested in COINS. This forum could use many more like you, in my opinion!
Welcome and great first post. I for one agree strongly that a hobby should be a hobby and nothing else as it is a distraction from the daily grind. For me the market and everything else around it could crash and I will still enjoy what I collect. My collection and the enjoyment I get from it is priceless to me no matter the value.
Keep collecting and not investing and I think you will be okay.

Welcome to the forum, enjoyed reading your post. Finishing that set of CC Morgan's is a real accomplishment. May I suggest trade dollars?
Thanks again for the warm welcomes. I plan on participating going forward. Next step will be to see if I can take pics of some coins and learn to attach them. Will start a separate discussion to seek some input on that,
Welcome, and I agree with what you posted. Regardless of how you collect, you have something in common with this crowd, in that almost everyone here appreciates coins in various ways and it's always good to get different perspectives.
I suspect that coins will be collectable for a long time. It's not a race of any kind, so take your time and appreciate what strikes your fancy. That's what I think it's all about.
I knew it would happen.
