random PCGS photo thread

this is a 1856 $5 in an ogh beside a green PCGS box of her sisters.

This is on a couple of other threads... but this is my favorite coin. The fact that it hasn't been cracked in 30 years and is a key mint state coin is beyond me. That's a good looking gold coin with a gold bean by the way.

Why is this coin only graded MS60?

I purchased a MS 1915 D Barber Half in the mid '70's. When PCGS first came out grading coins I had a dealer submit it for me:

Sorry for the bad photos. I was keeping my Barber set in an album; the one in the slab was always a stepchild. In 2011 I decided to have my entire set graded by ICG, this one included. They cracked it out and returned it in a 62 holder. I've since sold the coin, but apparently ICG didn't return the insert to PCGS- it still shows as an active coin.

Mexico Peso 1898 - 1949 Restrike

In 1949, United States, Mexico, and the Republic of China worked out a deal to strike 10,250,000 Mexican peso coins to ship to China to pay soldiers fighting the Communists.

It was decided to use the design from the 1898 Mexican peso.

All of the dies for striking the pesos were prepared in Mexico City and small changes were made to differentiate the new coins from the 1898 originals.

8,250,000 were struck at the Mexico City Mint and 2,000,000 were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

The ones in existence today come from Mexico City as the San Francisco ones were later melted.
