A coin I wanted at the SB auction sold for really cheap.....

....because I logged in to bid 4pm PST, not EST.

Yeah, it's totally not confusing that Sessions 1-3 are listed in Eastern time and Sessions 4-5 are listed in Pacific time!

I logged in at the correct time, but even with some very aggressive bidding got completely blown out of the water on some tokens I was chasing.

Even worse - it might have still sold for really cheap even if you had logged in at the correct time!
Just got to Baltimore. Show starts tomorrow. When's the first session?

I lost all 11 lots I was bidding on (mainly Bolen pieces). Almost decided to pull the trigger on the last one but it sold for like a lot more than it should have...this felt a little like the Newman sale a few years ago...because of the provenance of the coins, they sold for a bunch more than they would have otherwise sold for and I decided (like then) to abstain
I won a Bolen token. I can't provide a link but it was the one before the silver. I'll post it later as I'm on my phone and it's hard to post links now. It was the beautiful r/b one

I don't even collect Bolen tokens and that one caught my eye...congrats on what looks like a great pickup!
Wow, talk about your beard detail! Congrats Stef. A beautiful addition.
The CWT's struck over US and foreign coins went way too cheap!
Ouch!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Nice score, Stef. I love it, and you can't ask for better provenance! I think the silver Bolen piece went cheaply. At least in comparison to the silver one last year that went for nearly $10k!
But that's exonumia for you... You got to step up or shut up when a rare piece crosses the block. Some of these come up once in a lifetime.

I think one reason is that the silver piece last year was 100%, no debate, Bolen's singular example (he scribed the edges of his coins and that one was scribed), while the silver piece that sold today did not have his markings leaving some to believe there might be more out there (and even perhaps Bolen's original piece). Anyhow...that was just my take on it, I almost bid on that piece but had to stop myself as I'm >50% convinced that a new piece (with Bolen's markings) will come to market in the next 2-3 years.
PS. Meanwhile, I finally got a few grades to post and among them was an (1862) Brass JAB-4 Bolen Medal Arsenal Without Sun, PCGS MS63, and an (1862) Brass JAB-5 Bolen Medal Young America, PCGS MS64 ... can't wait to see Phil's images of the coins
Can anyone post a link to the above sale?
I tried searching using the Stacks app, but it has challenges and they never fixed any of the multitude of bugs since it was released.

Thanks, but I was looking for the one that sold for almost $10k.
I think it's this one

Nice token.....I see it was ex Les Heilbronner. Les was a local guy here and a fine dealer, always willing to share his knowledge. He sure knew his copper. I was set up next to him at shows quite often. Back in the late 70's and 80's anyway. He could quote you a Sheldon number from across the room.
I remember being so happy picking up Fugios for 38 or 40 dollars, knowing I could sell them to Les for 45 !!!
That's the one. Estimated at $1500-$2000 , and it hammered North of $9k.
Methinks auction fever took hold of at least two bidders. (It happens to the best of us!)
I like Bolen's work alot, but I focus on Merriam who is still somewhat under the radar. Bolen prices have skyrocketed.

"Coin collecting for outcasts..."
I knew collector / dealer Steve Tanenbaum (who owned many of the tokens in this Stack's sale) and talked to him fairly regularly. Many of the tokens that he had in his personal collection "were the best he could find in 50 years."
Steve was meticulous in recording pedigrees. I bought many Civil War Store Card tokens from him over the years, and each came with a detailed pedigree. Steve also noted on the holders (cardboard or plastic!) if the token was a Plate Coin in one of the reference books, for example a token plated in the Fuld book on Civil War Tokens.
Steve kindly sold me the Unique Detroit, Michigan Perkins Hotel Civil War Store Card token stuck on a copper-nickel planchet from his collection, and he later sold me a Zinc (white metal / tin) example. Both of these CWTs were struck from the dies my great-great grandfather, Wm. Perkins, Jr. had made by John Stanton of Cincinnati (unbeknownst to my gg-grandfather) and were sold directly to collectors.
I personally miss Steve and our conversations.
Congratulations to those who won lots in this Stack's sale from the Tanenbaum collection.

Very true.
Some of these tokens very rarely trade hands, and when you see something with the Tanenbaum pedigree, you just have to believe it is the finest known. If something better was out there, it would have made its way into his collection. The man scoured bourse floors all over the country for years and years.
Here are my two pieces I picked up for my Merriam collection:

Merriam storecard, NGC MS65RB ex. Tanenbaum, George Fuld
A rare Charlestown piece by Merriam. Dunn & Co. Oyster House NGC MS64BN ex.Bowers, Tanenbaum, probably Fuld. Amazingly preserved. Ive never seen another in mint state and only a few that were circulated with problems. Happy to add this beauty to my collection:

Was Steve Tannenbaum the guy that was hit by a car being driven by a 'bad guy' ?
I seem to remember something like that.....
He wasn't just "some guy." Rather, he was a man known for an encyclopedic knowledge of most all exonumia, and he amassed a huge collection of high quality and rare tokens and medals.
Tragically, he was struck on his bicycle as a suspect fled from police in a motor vehicle.
And the hobby lost a good man with a real passion.

I will say that exonumania is coming above the waterline now and people are noticing it (myself included). This thread and several others here in the last 6 months evidence this. And also a relatively small (in size) sale has created this much stir. As @DCW told me last night, some of these pieces are "gateway" pieces into this world (ie. referencing gateway drug parallel). LOL but it's so true! I have quietly dropped $10k+ on this stuff just in the past 2 months, which is huge for me in terms of spend on non traditional coinage.
So lookers beware... you are entering the Twilight Zone and will never be the same once you buy one of these cool pieces.
I was quite surprised by the sale of this token, obviously quite important to those who collect these --
Offered raw, with SBG's grading opinion of VF20, this piece realized $16,450!
Looks much better than VF 20 to me. Just sayin'....

I remember talking to Steve about some of the cool do/fo tokens he had, thinking they would never come available.
Even though I now own several, it's really disappointing to have missed out on the recent offerings.
Stef - nice token!
