NEWP.... Buffalo 1938d addiction continues

I don't know what it is but these little nickels get me everytime. Dang if I can tell the difference between a MS64 and a MS66 but I like them. Another $50 down the drain... this one a MS66

If you think the '38-D is habit forming try the 1913 var 1.
Nice bright coin.............I like 'em like that. Lotta "rugosity" on Black Diamond. (Rugosity=Ruggedness)

That is a beautiful looking Buffalo.

Nice! Now try to find a matching 1926-D.

Not down the drain at all. Nice coin. Remember, Coin Collecting is the only hobby where you can spend all of your money and still have some left.
As Ron says
it can be addicting. Right before I jumped into this thread I was looking at 13 type ones and thinking about buying one. You can get super nice ms64 and ms65s for really nice prices, and for all the world some of them look as good as the ms66 and ms67s and a fraction of the price. These two dates, the 13 type one and the 39d are amongst my favorites for strike and availability and anyone can own a two coin complete type set if the want.

I meant 38d above not 39d as of course the series was done after the 38d.

I remember some years back at the end of our club show auction one of the members had a spectacular gem 38 D/D, easily a 66 by today's standards, that no one wanted with starting bid of $10. Afterward he sold it to one of our YN's for $5.
Very nice coin... Are the faint lines above the braid and on the cheek a photographic anomaly or on the slab? They just seem to stand out in that picture.... I know, as a 66, they are not cleaning lines... Cheers, RickO
It's an unlikely quest, but I've been looking at shows for a Raw gem MS 66-68.
Had two grade MS65 this week.
Got three raw examples that I will send in at some point.
It's fun and a cheap way to test and inprove my grading skills.
RickO...........the coin was clashed. Denver did a real good job cleaning up the marks, but I think what you see are a reworking of the incuse portion of the die.
The clash was serious, as evidenced by the moth eaten look on Iron Tail's neck (which is from the Buffalo hide).
For those that do not know.........clash marks do not affect the technical grade of a coin.
Cheers, PeteO
I very much enjoy all buffalo nickels. I love the series and I too am addicted to these beautiful coins.
I like your coin, way to go
I remember running into the word rugosity for the first time in Walter Breens proof encyclopedia where he said
pay attention to the rugosity of the bison to determine whether or not it is a proof, among other things.

So..................Breen stole the word from ME!
HEE HEE...........I own the book.......I probably saw it in there. Funny thing. I used the word at a local coin shop and everyone in there liked it.

I remember getting a big postcard from David Hall Rare Coins in the late 1980ies touting the pcgs 1938d ms65 buffalo nickel as a sure bet to become a one thousand dollar coin, wow!!
a.k.a "The BUFFINATOR"
Of course David was talking about a pcgs slabbed specimen. And at that time it would have been in an original rattler holder!!
