Light eBay Humor For a Chuckle: Buyer Returned DATELESS Quarter Because He Already Had That DATE

I love my eBay customers, so this is not a slam in any way. I have a weird sense of humor and this one made me chuckle a bit.

What do dealers do when they purchase a large collection that contains coins ranging from the good, the bad and the ugly? Well, there are collectors for all types of coins, so we sell them online--in this case, eBay.

The coin in question is a "dateless" 1831 Large Letter quarter. It is likely an 1831 B-5, which is common. Even though the date has long since been worn away, we know the attribution by the die markers. It is confusing to potential buyers on eBay if we give the date on a coin that is clearly dateless, so we tend to just say "dateless." In other words, under-promise and over-deliver.

The thing that made me chuckle is that the buyer is clearly doing a date and/or variety set, yet chose to buy a coin without a readable date. Maybe he thought it was another date? By the way, the reverse has strong details and a nearly full rim. It just wore unevenly.

That would rank up there with returning a blast white coin for questionable toning.

Most collectors are dateless as well.

They must be collecting by variety and your picture not good enough for attribution. They said they already have 1831.

Just collect dateless Buffalo Nickels..............they're cheap, and there's a lot of them out there.

:D I assume the buyer used the variety to identify the date... Good chuckle there... Cheers, RickO

Not worth returning for $37 IMO. If I was the buyer I would've just sucked it up.

That's what great about collecting dateless Buffs. You can call them any date you'd like. :)
