Just When You Thought Your Coinstar Find was Pretty Awesome (There is Gold in Them Thar Machines!)

So ... I was at my local B&M about a week ago telling the dealer about my recent Coinstar haul of four 40% silver halves. I thought I was pretty hot stuff. He gives me a look and asks "Wanna hear one better?" Ready to have my bubble burst, I say "sure." He said just a few weeks ago a father and young son (~10 years old) walk into the shop and the boy lays a 2 1/2 dollar gold Indian on the counter and asks how much it is worth. The dealer looks it over and quotes him a price of around $180. The dad asked his son if he wants to sell it and the boy says "Uh, yeah!" haha. The dealer asked the boy where he got it and he says he just found it in the reject bin of a Coinstar machine that same morning! Pretty cool, right?! A budding coin collector!

Boy.... I would be....pissed! If the kid who stole it dumped it into a Coinstar.
I always check the coin star reject bin when I walk past them. I have not seen anything yet though.
Call me a skeptic, and I believe the OP was told this gold coin was found, but I would have to see that one happening to believe it.
My last CoinStar find was a Ghana 10 Pesewas coin dated 2007.
Not gold but "Nickel clad steel".

Haha, I knew one or two of you guys would be skeptical. It didn't take long. Sounds "too good to be true," right? Oh, ye of little faith!
Well, all I can say is that I've known my dealer for years and I trust that the story is completely legit. Besides, it isn't that far-fetched ... there are lots of little coin hoards out there that could (and sometimes do) find their way to a local bank, a cash register, or even a Coinstar machine.
Let's just enjoy the story and dream about being the one that found it.

If everyone was able to find a gold $2.5 Indian in the coinstar reject bin, I think we would have a lot more coin collectors out there.
Cool story! I always check the coin star when I pass by.

I do too,but always empty lately. Too many people looking for "gold".
I am curious how the person dumping the coins did not see the gold.

A little off topic, but many years ago I owned an old house that was built in 1914. I was renovating the place tearing walls and basebaords off. I kept dreaming of finding an AU 1914 D or '09 S VDB cent, but it never happened. Oh well.
Long ago, in a Galaxy far away, in New York, around 1965, I got a $5 at, cannot remember if it was SS Krege or Kleins, early version of KMART when the kid in front of me tried to pay for a record with it and the cashier would not take it, so I stepped up, gave him a $5 bill, got the $5 Indian, and everyone was happy.
They likely did, but were completely ignorant as to what it was. Same reason silver gets left at the machine.

Wow.....what a lucky day for the young mustangman!
When I worked for Coin World in the 1970's I was Secretary of the local coin club, and the Treasurer was the #2 man i the Sidney Police Department. ALL of the parking meter money passed through his desk before going to the bank, and he told me that over the years he had found two $2-1/2 gold pieces spent as dimes.
Best part is, there are now two new coin junkies! I mean 2 new numastics.!.!

Haven't found much recetly besides a few modern Canadian and Central American coins. And of course Chuck-E-Cheese tokens.
Not actually in the Coinstar, but nearby on the floor I found a 1991 2 Pfennig. From afar I thought it was a Lincoln cent. Had about 30% luster still.
I must walk by the wrong Coinstars. I never find anything.

I do find coins in the reject bin.... not often. Been a drought lately... once found almost $2 in change... once a silver dime.... a lot of Euro's....a gold coin would be amazing. I have seen people who do not look at the reject bin... and others who take the coins out and reprocess or pocket them... (Coinstar is at the end of the checkout lines in the market). Cheers, RickO
OK...just got back from the market... Jackpot at the coinstar today..... $2.27....seven quarters (one Canadian) four dimes, one nickel. one Spanish pesta 1947, one 10 Euro cent piece... the rest cents.... in there was one 1943S steel penny, one 1918 wheatie and a 1937 wheatie.... Not bad... Cheers, RickO
Way to go.!! That's a great coinstar day!
Nice.!.!
I would love to own a coinstar machine!
Recently, found my lost wedding band in the reject tray.
I found $1.58 in change in the coinstar yesterday. Whoohoo!
