Learned my lesson about Ebay photos...

As a newer collector coming over from the PSA sportscard world, we buy the card, not the holder. Same as coins, but in the coin world, I have learned that photos can vary greatly. What you see is not necessarily what you get. The bright pictures were pulled from the Ebay page. The other pictures are mine, they are a little rough but I wanted to show what the coin actually looks like in hand. Any tips on how to decipher photos on EBay?

I only see one picture. The reverse. Can you check them and see if it's on your end?

That might be my blurred photo. I think that what concerned me the most was the black on the reverse. Ebay photo showed a spot of toning but more brownish yellow. That was ok with me but now I am not so sure.

I was going to add it to my registry set but that black area on the back just kills it for me. I will never get used to it so back it goes.

If the brighter, more in focus images are from the ebay listing then I would simply tell you that coins look different from different angles and when illuminated with different lighting. There might be no effort to deceive, but the lights that you use to look at your coins (or image your coins) may be different and bring out different qualities in the coin than the lights used for the images in the listing. There is no one size fits all for images with respect to most coins. Since you come from the card world, I would imagine that most lighting techniques produce more uniform results with flat, two-dimensional paper and ink and this will take some getting used to.

Me too. Mainly to determine a more accurate toning impression when the photo of the coin listed has an obvious white balance error, etc.

One set of those photos shows a superb gem, truly FSB Merc. I don't see much of a problem here.

I apologize for the confusion in the photos. I had problems posting them this morning. Pictures 1 and 4 are my photos. They accurately show black areas on the coin. These pictures are more realistic. The black on the reverse disturbs me more than the black on the obverse. Pictures 2 and 3 are from the Ebay listing. The exposure? was lightened to make the black areas seem yellowish or light brown. No hint of black tarnish to be found.

Thanks for all the input to help me make better, educated decisions going forward.

I think it looks nice as well.
There are always things missed in photos, intentionally or otherwise.

Nothing on that coin really bothers me.... That being said, it is your coin and your opinion... if it does not suit you, then by all means, return it. I might even agree if I had the coin in hand...just not from the photo's. Cheers, RickO

Ricko, I feel officially part of the boards now that you have posted to my query. Thank you.

I guess my next question about this coin is.....was this coin dipped? Is this something that can determined either with my pictures or the Ebay pictures?

Was it dipped? Eh...maybe...maybe not. 1945-D Mercs are a pretty common coin and were saved in roll quantities so finding one that is essentially white and has not been dipped shouldn't be unheard of.
