What the guy failed to do is run a real listing with good pictures. Anyone have a guess on grade?

I realize that, he did update his comments: "I made a mistake in the listing this coin is actually a 1839-O Coin and referenced it as a "D" coin. In reality the "D" on this coin represents "Dollar".....Again this listing is for a 1839-O Coin!"
Is there special technology to try to correct poor images on coins like this, like they did with Hubble?

Hard to tell from the pics as to whether it is a straight grade, but the guy easily lost a grand by not submitting.

Yes, if the coin straight grades that is a major rip, too bad sellers don't check around for appraisals, any competent auctioneer knows how to get near market value. Even a barn auction in the middle of nowhere with proper advertising would have drawn more money.
