On Ebay, these two coins sold on Tuesday June 6th
1) 1898 Liberty Nickel PCGS PO-01
2) 1899 Liberty Nickel PCGS PO-01
First sold for $83.00 and the second for $103.50
Guess it pays to look for worn out coins as well.
I will say I do not know if this was a registry set type purchase, but if not, then it is real lunacy (at least a low-ball Registry set is a reason for chasing these)

It is fascinating how much the registry sets have influenced the market in the past dozen or so years. The area that I see the craziest activity today is with the AU 58+ grade.

Did either of the coins have the green bean CAC? If going for low grade, I'm not sure I would want a high-end P01.
Registry aside, it is difficult to obtain the PO 1 grade.
Sure is I had to pay almost $300.00 for a AU58 this weekend. But that was what the PCGS Price Guide said it was worth.
I was not aware that pcgs had appended a plus to the au58 grade. Seems nuts to me!

I Have several lowball graded gold coins that have nothing to do with the Registry. They are just great looking coins.

Low ball coins were popular for many years before the registry added low ball sets. The registry didn't create the interest, but it may have fueled further growth.

I know people like these, and as a collector, I understand tastes vary. My real concern is the ease with which these can be produced. That means a coin with little value can be transformed into a coin that certain collectors will pay a significant premium for... and the 'doctoring' is undetectable. Cheers, RickO

No, I mean there are likely many PO1's to be made from there but you are right, they are more like $30+ each at that point

Boy am I a dummy. I spend lowest of the low grade coins like this (shield, V, and Buffalo nickels, along with Indian head cents), hoping that they may help spark an interest in some kid to collect coins by finding a neat old coin.
The low ball registry has greatly improved the value of my collection .:) Now I just have to get a few of them slabbed.

That's funny. Probably the only area of collecting where a gold bean would be a disappointment to the collector.

As you infer, I too should rather read the interesting (NOT!), contrasting opinions of uninformed, wanna-be, numismatic intellectuals-in-their-own-mind than read contrasting opinions offered by those here who actually know what they are talking about.
There's no reason to label someone's opinion as pathetic. If you disagree with it then ignore it or (in the case of them being uninformed) try and educate them. You're just being churlish.

Thanks for your reply, that's very good advice - do it. Additionally I just got to remember a word in my passive vocabulary...LOL.
I don't suffer fools well because I grew up in "tougher times" well before political correctness, do-gooders, wimps, and "snowflakes." Therefore, I tend to be very direct when communicating with people with multiple stars and multiple posts who I consider (in my own mind...LOL) to be my equal. While some posts on these forms are certifiably "pathetic," no one including me considers any of the folks who come to this site for help in the "pathetic" category. However, the whiners are!
You don't know me. Perhaps if you did some research, you would see by my posts that I agree with a strong numismatic education and have been very quick to share anything I think I might know with anyone here. This attack started when I clarified a statement. While I believe an informed discussion with conflicting opinions is a wonderful thing to read, I also believe dissenting opinions made by uninformed folks is pathetic.. That does not stop me and others from helping them. See the difference? Just because something is pathetic does not make it bad. I've been told by a moderator on one of the major numismatic forums that I should not expect too much from the posters. We all had to learn and no one here knows everything; I find the members here more to my liking.
As to the number of disagreements in my profile...there is a pathetically, simple-minded reason for it.
You especially should be able to figure it out!

A PCGS MS62 1898 recently sold for $123.50, but many more are much more expensive. So, if you were lucky, you can find some here and there for about 20% more, but overall you'd be spending more.
The hobby is about having fun and this is one way to have fun. Many collectors like coins that can tell a story and PO-01s have a lot of stories to tell.
Are you charging shipping? I wouldn't pay the shipping cost on that coin!

I would not get discouraged. If this were the best condition I could afford, I'm probably not alone. It's all about the "collecting gene."

A chain cent is not really a relevant example. It is not valued more as a P01 than at a higher grade. A CAC sticker helps. A gold sticker is even better.
For the most part buyers of very low grade chain cents are getting the best they can for the money they have.
