Information from the ANA that I did not know

PTVETTERPTVETTER Posts: 6,051 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was looking forward to vote in the upcoming election, however when I asked where my ballot was, I got this answer.
A member must be a member for a full year in order to vote.
I joined as a life member in October of 2016 and because of that I am ineligible to vote.
Go figure?

It makes sense to have a restriction on new members when it comes to voting. If that restriction wasn't there, candidates would sign up lots of new members to vote for them. This happens already to some extent, but it requires planning a year or more in advance.

That said, when it comes to new life members, I think those folks like yourself should get a vote from the start as you're much less likely to be signing up just to vote in the current election.

When getting my ballots in the mail, I still think it is a bit odd that they let clubs have a vote. Sure clubs are members, but in sending the ballot to the address of the club on file, it likely just gives that one person an extra vote in the election. I would guess that most clubs don't have a vote of their own members to see how to cast the club vote. I'm involved in many clubs and I have never seen that happen.

I will take my ballots for the clubs I'm involved with to their meetings this month and I'm sure when I mention it to the members they will just tell me to ignore it or do whatever I want. When roughly half the members of the clubs aren't even ANA members, it's hard to get them to care about an election. Particularly when it's usually folks running unopposed anyways. At least this year there is actually a contest for President.

Seems that anyone willing to make a lifetime committment should be able to vote. Consider this as a potential project-amend the By-Laws or the ANA Constitution to reflect something that makes sense. Good luck and power to the Lifers.

Imho, it shouldn't be a year. 6 months at most.
And, as Illini says, for life members, it should just be automatic as it is super unlikely people are signing up as life members at the last second in order to vote for a certain person.

That surprises me, however, in checking other 'membership' organizations, it is not unique. Cheers, RickO

This makes sense to me. I agree with Illini.

But....as a life member you can vote after you die, too.

Shoot, they have been doing that in Chicago for decades.

    Life goes on
Just a though maybe the ANA should look inward before looking outward
In order to move forward you have to pull up the anchor first
