    1884-o is a common date in Morgan Dollars. The coin shown is in the AU58-MS62 range, and it should be rather easy to assign a value to it. However, it has traces of green residue on the high points (eagle's breast, for example) due to storage in a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) holder of some sort. If left as-is, the green substance can eat away at the surface of the coin and damage it. The recommended procedure for removing the green material is to very gently rinse it with acetone, which will not harm the coin. If you plan to give it a rinse, please be advised that acetone is flammable and is potentially harmful to inhale.

    rhedden thank you for the insight! I had no idea what the green was on the coin it was in those blue books. Took it out and put it in a 2x2

    As rhedden said, the coin now needs an acetone dip to remove the PVC contaminant from the coin.

    It's good you removed it from the harmful flip but you now need to arrest the potentially damaging PVC on the coin.

    Acetone is harmless to metal so don't worry about further damage. Pick up some 100% pure acetone from your local hardware store, submerse it for a few minutes, and rinse it well with distilled water. Gently pat dry and store in a proper holder.

    Morgans are a great series. If you don't mind my asking, what attracted you to those coins and how much did you pay? Those are common dates and the 84-O looks AU and possibly cleaned, You can find really great album coins for $50-$60 just be patient.

    Actually I have a lot more Morgans and a complete set of Peace. Earlier USA coins is what a family member collected which is now mine. Some just to fill the old blue books and some to grade. Trying to go through it all and make some sense of it all.

    I love them too. But it's too hardcore for an average Joe such as myself to complete the set without breaking the bank. Two MS 65 of common date are enough for me. lol
