I would like to know more about the differences in these two 1970 S Lincoln 1C coins. Particularly the size and the positioning of the mint mark in relation to the dates.

Mintmarks were applied to the dies by hand "back in the day" (I believe into the 1990's) so it would not be uncommon to have the mintmark in different locations on different dies. These both appear to be large date coins. The easiest pick-up point for me is the loop of the 9 in the date points more to 3:00 than 5:00 on the small date. This image from PCGS CoinFacts may help you in telling the difference. Small date is a bit of a misnomer as the dates are largely the same size on either.

Applied to the dies by hand...not struck onto the coin. All dies were prepared in Philadelphia and then shipped to the branch mints where the mint-marks were applied.
Permit me to correct you, Mod. You are right about the Mintmarks being applied by hand. The Mint used a hammer to "punch" the Mintmark into the die.
This was only done at the main mint in Philadelphia, then the dies were shipped to the branch mints.
