Question on Old holder NGC Bust Half and opinions welcome!
So I recently purchased this 1828 bust half in a old soap bar NGC AU50 holder with wild rainbow toning that my iPhone couldn't quite capture... I was wondering if you guys think this is undergraded as to me it looks to be a 53-55.... Coin has amazing color and I think it may Gold cac??? Also just want to confirm that it's a 1828 Square Base 2, Small 8's, Large Letters. Also wondering how much premium you would give this coin based on other AU50's. Would love your opinions on the coin!

Looks like a great coin. I would love to see the label... What generation of soap box is it?
I would not crack that one and no chance at a gold from those images. I have my doubts about any CAC. I like the reverse color.
Far from an expert in these but it appears to have XF wear and already got the bump to AU for the fairly nice color on the reverse. The obverse appears to be a slight negative from the image shown - if in hand it's as nice as the reverse then an upgrade is possible but I doubt a gold sticker

I have been looking for an 1828 with that look for quite a while! Would not be surprised to see the grade bump if you chose to get it graded again
Ya I definitely don't think I'm going to be cracking this one... Just was wondering on an opinion of grade
My opinion (from these pics): Nice toning, but might not upgrade though.
If you are selling, I would leave it in the holder and go the auction route
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
It's interesting to see how the interpretation of the grade or chance at CAC is all over the place. Likely, this has as much to do with the actual wear on the coin as it does your description and how it deviates from the images. My guess is that you would be best served by sending to CAC. It is also a square base 2, large 8s, large letters coin, as you suggested.

My first impression was the 50 is about right. (I don't try to guess or second guess CAC).
I'd call that a PCGS AU50. Today, at NGC, I suspect it would do a little better. Should sticker but I don't see gold.
Looks like an O.120. Nice coin.
I'm also guessing you have a short-haired black dog.
Lance.
If you didn't show me the label, I would have guessed XF45.
Definitely leave it in that holder. It alone has added value. I think the AU 50 might be right but CAC might give it some love. It's certainly worth a shot.
Looks fairly graded to me... I would not crack it. Cheers, RickO
I can't get a good image on a nicely toned CBH to save my life but I think I'd send it in to CAC and if blessed, leave it in the old holder.
I agree with those that say leave it alone. Those that like it don't need a sticker, and those that don't like it won't change their mind because of a sticker. It looks fairly graded to the extent I can grade from photos viewed on my phone. Some might prefer the existing holder, and the mystery of its upgrade potential. If you were to try and sell, use someone like Lance who can better capture the coin. Glad you're happy with it.
.
Let us know the outcome if you send it to CAC.
Ever thought about a PCGS holder, provided they as hard on this type of coin as they are on old gold? Then get the CAC sticker if you want it. PCGS coins at times go for more than the same grade with a CAC sticker in an NGC holder. I don not bother with CAC as PCGS is good enough for me and I don not see the the value in and third part opinion.
Nice looking coin! Here's one in that style holder that is for sure undergraded:

That's a very crusty CBH!
Keep the holder and see what CAC says about her.

That's a crusty one.
I don't think it would grade higher than 53......hardly worth losing the old holder for.
It's a great piece.

I time it is correct as graded.
