Anybody here collect Peace Dollars?

I recently began collecting this series and was somewhat shocked by the grading standards used. I had been collecting $2 1/2 gold pieces, Platinum Eagles and other series, but was surprised at how differently Peace dollars were graded.

Is it because of the notorius weak strike? the susceptability to "Hits"? or what?

I'm having fun with this but was wondering if any one here could enlighten me regarding some of these questions.

    Never even thought about collecting Peace $ --- toned Peace $ yes, but not just plain old white ones!

    BTW -- it's easy grading them --- compared to other series, just add a .5 to 1 point you think the grade should be and that's what it probably is.

    I have been working on a set for a year and 1/2 and still lack seven coins to complete the set. All coin are in ms62 to ms65. I will look at tons of coins for each one I buy. I'm sure this is true of most series but, I am constently amazed at the diffrence in appreance in coins of the same grade.

    I started about a year ago, and it will probably take me a couple more years to finish.

    Nice ones are hard to find. I can go through a good-size show and not find any I like. Last week I got lucky at the St. Louis show... found a 26-S and 35-S, both PQ MS64. That was unusual.

    The good news is that the series is fairly short and all the coins can be found... just takes a little looking to find examples you like.

    Big, beautiful, silver coins. Relatively small set, with a couple expensive ones but nothing unattainable. The word "peace" on a coin is very comforting as well. What's not to like?

    I agree with "PEACE" and the piture of Liberty.... And, That beautiful Eagle on the reverse.

    There had to be quite a number of them melted back when silver sky-rocketed and the coins weren't collected at all. I know my generation received Peace Doolars as gifts from parents and grandparents.

    What exactly do you mean by difference in grading? Are you finding they are graded tougher or lighter than most coins?

    I love peace dollars. I love thinking about carrying a bunch in your pocket during the roaring twenties and prohibition. They are a beautiful design (my favorite reverse of any us coin) and have escaped relatively unscathed from crazy hype and exponentially balooning prices. (though the good ones have seen some increases lately).

    This is quite true. Many tone rather unattractively, and a lot of blast white ones have been over dipped. Thats what makes a good solid, attractive nice UNC peace dollar such a value.

    forgive the typo......what I meant to say is that Peace Dollars DONT seem very popular. I almost never see a thread about them. I have a few, but they really don't do them for me. But The seem to be rather easily had, and the short run seems to be somewhat easy to obtain....what gives?

    Both are in ANACS 65. I don't think they will cross, though. IMO, ANACS values
    color and originality more so than PCGS.

    Yes, I like them too. They are not overvalued or over hyped quite yet. It is a challenge to find the right one that hasn't been abused. I like their lower mintages compared to Morgans (of course almost everybody loves Morgans including me).

    I think Peace Dollars have huge potential in the future. Relatively short lived 24 coin set with lower mintages on most. Now, completing a set with Proofs would be near impossible. Especially if a 64-d surfaced.

    The future is with our new generation and youngins. Two decades from now, how many collectors would said "When I was a boy I always wanted to complete my peace dollar collection"? Just a thought.

If they'd somehow been able to produce it with the detail and relief de Francisci intended (difficult to do!) it would have been one of the most beautiful coins in the post-ancient era.

    The series isn't too daunting - only 24 coins and no show-stoppers. While most of the issues are common, finding well-struck, original coins with good luster is a tremendous challenge.

    I just sold my set, most of it anyhow. :(

    ...... but I'm working on another one. :)

    I replied to this tread 12 years ago. At that point I was working on a Peace Dollar set. Since then I completed the set with coins in MS64 to MS67. I have since sold the majority of the set off and lately have been thinking of putting it back together again. Peace Dollars are my favorite coin.

    Have them all, mostly raw and circulated with a story to tell if they could talk.

    I wouldn't say I "collect" them since I haven't purchased one since long before this thread was started. Maybe one day.

    I built an AU set on a whim some years ago. After purchasing several estates, I found that I had many of the dates in the series, including the 21P and 28P. I later found out the 34S is the real stopper, and a few others were tough too, like the 28S.

    The High Relief 1921 is one of my favorites but a little mushy on the hair detail.

    This 21P has reasonably well struck hair....but the date is a little mushy:

    All I need is a 27s to complete my mint state set. I'm shooting for an MS63. Most of my coins are lustrous with great eye appeal. I like toned Peace Dollars but prefer white examples.

    That mint bag shot reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode I saw recently about a guy who got gambling fever in Vegas....there were multiple shots of high grade Peace dollars spilling out of slot machines.....of course I don't think any were dated 1964 ;)
