Did I do okay on this counterstamped Stone Mountain?

I caught this on the 'Bay recently on a cheap BIN. I've never owned one. It looked good so I took a chance. Shame about the obverse scratch. But do the counterstamps look legit? What say the experts?

I believe that is a Texas over Virginia counterstamp and, yes, I believe it is original.

Odds are you did real good. To bad about the scratch.

Don't see anything not legit with it.

I am not expert on counterstamps, however, if TomB thinks it is authentic, that would be good enough for me. Cheers, RickO

Thanks guys -- that is what I was hoping to hear! :)

Is it worth slabbing or do the Stone Mountain collectors prefer their counterstamps raw?

If you want to keep it from getting "scratched up" even more, get it holdered. It will come back as a "details" coin, but it will be safer to pass around the room for others to "oooh and aaah" about...and to keep slobber off of it.

Looks like Zorro got ahold of it.

Definitely looks real to me, the TEXAS over VA is a known variety and all of the number and letter forms look correct. I don't know if our host grades these but I had one certified by NGC a while back, they will give it a details grade and note the counterstamp on the holder.

Not sure if he's still around but forum member njcoincrank used to deal in these, going back maybe ten years now I cherrypicked a couple of examples on eBay and moved them through him to specialist collectors. If you do a forum search there are also a few good threads detailing the history behind the counterstamps.

PCGS has certified these for at least a few years.
