PAN SHOW Report

WalkerfanWalkerfan Posts: 9,775 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just happened to be in the Pittsburgh area this weekend, so I decided to attend the PAN show. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet @kranky and @PTVETTER I really enjoyed talking to both of them. This was the first time that I have ever met any board members, in person, and it was a real pleasure. I felt like I could have talked to them all day long. Super guys!

Saw LOTS of coins and spoke to many dealers about coins and the market in general. There were a few 'chicken littles' there but I thought that most dealers and the public, in general, were VERY enthusiastic and the attendance was good. I didn't see any little kids but I did see quite a few 20 and 30 somethings there and they came to spend money. The Reeded Edge was there with some high end early Walkers and so was Don Keopple of ACE Coins of Moline, IL.

My buddy who was with me is a newbie but not a YN, so I am trying to teach him and make up for lost time. lol I helped him select a coin. It was a 1900 O Morgan graded MS 60/63 in a very old and historic ANACS plastic flip with photo grade card circa 1984. He paid 60 bucks for it and I advised him that I thought that it was a nice coin and a fair price with the added flavor of the historical factor. I told him to keep the card and to never open that plastic.

I bought a 1943 D WLH OGH in MS 65. I REALLY overpaid for it but I feel generous, when I'm at shows, and I like to support the dealers. I also like to leave with at least one souvenir and it is almost always a Walker. Besides, I think that you know that I am a sucker for an OGH. The guy was asking $215. Now, I know that it's not worth more than $150 but I got him down to $195, so I got to leave with my memento and a good story and he made a decent profit. Besides, my 1943 D in my NGC registry set ATS is a MS 66 in an old NGC #7 slab. Now that I have this nice OGH; I can now add it to my PCGS Registry set right here.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Thanks for sharing with us. I have talked to several dealers and they say the show was extremely busy yesterday (Friday). Unfortunately, I could not make it.

The Morgan sounds like a great pickup for your friend and congrats on the Walker.

Funny you say that, as the luster is what really sold me on the coin, so that is an intuitive comment. The surfaces are pretty smooth, too. I showed it to @kranky before I left and he liked the luster, as well. It is even better in hand than in my images, as it has very distinct bands and flow lines.

That was a nice report and a lovely Walker.
I hear you on always wanting to make a purchase, even if you pay a little strong. I love that philosophy, it actually costs very little and does so much. Kudos to you WF !
Whether I'm buying or selling, I want the other person to come out ahead of their game. I want to be able to do 'this' again......

@Walkerfan, was very nice to chat with you at PAN. Glad you stopped by. And as nice as that pic is, the coin is even creamier in hand. A beauty.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
